Q: kernel_task 800% cpu usage after 10.10.3 update

Basically my question people is as the title explains

After installing 10.10.3 my laptop is grinding to a halt and freezing

It turns out to be kernel_task is using 800% cpu usage

Does anyone else have this issue or maybe a resolution to fix it?

It is possible you have a 3rd party kernel task that does not play nice with the 10.10.3 update.  3rd party extensions become part of the kernel_task, and anything they do gets charged to the kernel task.

If you boot into Safe Mode (which does not load 3rd party additions by default), does your Mac kernel_task still consume 800% CPU?

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

You can use something like EtreCheck to see the 3rd party kernel extensions installed on your system.

    Hi

I have run the EtreCheck as you suggested and my results are below, I hope this helps

I did try safe mode with the Apple tech support this afternoon and it seemed ok in safe mode but suddenly started again when i went back into normal mode

These are the most likely suspects.  They are all loaded kernel extensions, and any CPU time they use will be charged to kernel_task.

The fact that Safe Mode stopped the problem is a VERY STRONG indication that one of these kernel extensions are responsible.

First, the long term forum contributors do not like anti-malware packages, as they are A) redundant to what Mac OS X provides, B) often time consume system resources and slow down the Mac, C) have often been the cause of system kernel panics.

How does Mac OS X protect me?

    <http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg-builtin/>

If "After" you remove the anti-malware product, if you are still seeing the 800% kernel_task CPU, then I would look at The intel EnergyDriver and the airparrot framebuffer (I assume you are using AirParrot to talk to your Apple TV).

If you do not need either of the intel or AirParrot drivers, then you might as well just remove them.  If you need them, then make sure they are the latest versions compatible with Yosemite.

    Problem System Launch Agents: ℹ️

        [running]    com.paragon.NTFS.notify.plist [Click for support]

Paragon interfaces with the file system.  There is a remote possibility that it is causing the file system (running as part of kernel_task) to do a lot of work on Paragon's behalf.  If the above kernel extensions do not resolve the issue, then you should look at Paragon.  I'm guessing here, so just keep this as something to if nothing else has worked.

        CleanMyMac 3 Menu    Application  (/Applications/CleanMyMac 3.app/Contents/MacOS/CleanMyMac 3 Menu.app)

The long term forum contributors do not like Mac cleaners.  Our opinion is that the just interfere with normal Mac OS X operations.  It is possible that this is try to flush memory, thus forcing the kernel_task to page data to disk.

Do you "Really" need 3 virtual machines?  And are all of them updated to be Yosemite compatible?

Bottom line, since Safe Mode stopped the problem, one of the 3rd party kernel extensions, launch daemons, launch agents, login items that are NOT loaded during Safe Mode is causing your problem.

    Hi BobHarris

thank you for your help and advise

Note 1: I installed the kispersky antivirus no more than 10 mins before i ran the test because i throught i might of catched the osx bitcoin miner virus and also i installed it after these problems where happening so i know its not that

Note 2: i have three VM Software installed because i am a developer and do alot of testing

Note 3: the cleanmymac i have used since using osx (about 6 years) because it does actually free up hdd space

Note 4: the airsquirrel should of been removed when i unistalled the application

I did however uninstall loads of different software removed not used kext extensions and it seems stable at the mo

Will update once i have found which thing it was causibg the problem

    Good.  I wish you luck.

Note 2: i have three VM Software installed because i am a developer and do alot of testing

I did not think the VM's were an issue, since they were not loaded at the time, I was just wondering.  Being a developer puts extra demands on you (I've been know ot maintain older software versions to make sure code I write works on older stuff - I've been a file system developer for about 20 years ).

Note 3: the cleanmymac i have used since using osx (about 6 years) because it does actually free up hdd space

The operating system changes, and what might have worked well in the past may no longer work.  CleanMyMac has been responsible for an number of performance issues with Mavericks and Yosemite users.  My advice, based on many many threads were it was responsible for performance issues, is to stop using it.

Note 4: the airsquirrel should of been removed when i unistalled the application

If nothing else, we found something worth cleaning up

    Hi BobHarris

I had good luck for a few days, but then all of a sudden this morning, its started again

I installed a few applications back after posting my last comment and it was stable, but yet this morning its started again

I just don't know what else I can check ?

I can remove the applications but if it was these causing the issue, then it would of happened from the word GO but never

is the any applications out there that can check what kernel_task is actually doing and what's loaded inside of it apart from the EtraCheck ?

    Regards

    Simon

There may be, but I do not know what they are.  You can also look at what tools are available in XCode for debugging, I think Apple has a package called CHUD (or something like that) on the developer.apple.com site.  You can look at what strange and mysterious commands are in /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, etc... along with the various 'man' pages.

The kernel_task is composed of the guts of Mac OS X and a ton of kernel extensions (most from Apple) that handle things like the file system, networking, USB devices, Bluetooth, etc...  Inside the kernel I do not think there is any separate tracking (I play with non-Mac kernels --  Linux, Solaris, AIX, Tru64 UNIX, etc... -- and they have similarities, but are also unique, so Mac OS X is going to have its own uniqueness)

I did try safe mode with the Apple tech support this afternoon and it seemed ok in safe mode but suddenly started again when i went back into normal mode

I'm going to go back to the Safe Mode experiment where it does not happen.

You should really look at every kernel extension in the EtreCheck list.  Consider removing them and those that you Really REALLY need, install from original sources, first making sure they are compatible with Yosemite.  This includes the virtual machines.

I would also do the same for the 3rd party launch daemons and agents.

And by Really need, I mean you cannot make a living without the item.  Live without the others.  If that fixes things, then after you are positive it is cured, you can consider adding back in some of the others you like, but do not need.  But only 1 at a time and give it enough time to make sure things are stable.

The laptop was stable for few hours however it's started again!

I removed istat menu, ntfs (paragon), little snitch and I'm now out of ideas!

I really don't wanna start again afresh as I have alot to backup!

any other ideas would be really helpful!

    attached is latest EtreCheck

    EtreCheck version: 2.1.8 (121)

I see you have Parallels installed. Are you running it when the hang occurs? I have an issue where my system is freezing only when I am running Parallels 9.

I see the comment from BobHarris above:

It is possible you have a 3rd party kernel task that does not play nice with the 10.10.3 update.  3rd party extensions become part of the kernel_task, and anything they do gets charged to the kernel task.

So, I am wondering if maybe this is causing a problem with Parallels.

Many other users find things improve when Kapersky is removed.

I think it is overkill for most users, if you want AV detection use ClamXAV. It is lighter on the system, but doesn't have all the other stuff that Kapersky has, do you need the network attack blocker & parental controls etc?

    http://clamxav.com/

You can always use a safe boot & try to test as much as possible if the OS is more stable you know that a third party tool is part of your problems. Just don't expect everything to work - graphics will look poor but still test as much as you can.

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support

I would also contemplate removing one of the VM tools to see if things improve, it would show you if they are part of the problem. I recollect reading other users on here stating that they do not work well together, but I don't have links & haven't tested this, sorry.

You also have a lot of recent crash logs –

Firefox - check the plugins & app for updates

Problem Reporter / crashreporter - read some of those logs to see if yo ucan tell what app or process is causing them.

Safari / Webkit - agin look for updates to plugins, disable extensions & retest.

Akamai NetSession Preferences <- this is a part of Akamai's peer to peer cache software, do you need to help Akamai improve their downloads? It uses your internet connection to speed up their downloads. It's unclear if it is running (I can't see other pieces) but I can't see any point in having it installed.

I also note you said you are concerned about how much data you have to backup - are you not already backing up? That seems crazy if you are not making copies of your data. Some slowness & crashes can be due to disk corruption or failure - you really need backups.

AirParrot was a known issue that would totally lock up some computers. Not sure whether they fixed it or not, but if you no longer need it I would not re-install at this point.

Kaspersky will always slow your computer, and has been known to fall off the rails for unknown reasons. It's not currently required as long as you are keeping your OS X and apps fully up-to-date. If you insist, use a passive A-V scanner.

If you previously had an adware infection that included Firefox it will need to be re-installed.

Make sure you are running FUSE v2.7.5 as it's the only current software I'm aware of the can extend the Yosemite OS X file system. I don't recognize "fuse-ext2" preference pane as being associated with the current version.

Agree that Akamai NetSession normally causes more problems than it solves.

Way to much crashing going on. There should not be any. If it doesn't stop then start by running OS X 10.10.3 Combo Update. If it still doesn't improve, re-install OS X from your Recovery HD. That won't touch your user files or third party apps, just give you a clean set of OS X and Apple apps.

I'd still be willing to bet it's contributing.

Almost all OS X infections these days are from adware as opposed to malware. The reason I didnt bring it up previously is that there is no evidence of it in your EtreCheck posting, so I thought that either you didn't have any or you had already removed it. Such infections comes from lots of places these days. C|Net's download.com, Softonics, Avast!,  and even Oracle's Java SE 8U40 offers modifications to your browser including changing your home page or search engine, toolbars, extensions that produce popup advertisements or redirect you to places you don't want to be. There is usually an "opt-out" checkbox, but they are easy to overlook. Apple began to counter these infestations after many months of allowing it, providing a modest removal tool included in the OS X 10.10.3 Update installer and this KB article Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac but it's incomplete. A colleague of mine came up with AdwareMedic (donationware) that will identify and optionally remove all currently known adware and is more thorough that EtreCheck at locating it. The problem with Firefox is that some adware injects itself into Firefox files and cannot be easily removed. If Firefox is behaving strangely for you these days, that could be why. If it's not, then there is no other evidence that I can see of something along these lines.

Besides Kaspersky being a constant and unnecessary troublemaker (I have no idea why you won't remove it, at least temporarily)

    from your first etrecheck report

    Top Processes by CPU: ℹ️

           210%    kav

             9%    kav_app

but your Free Disk Space is under 10%. You need to start ensuring your backup is up to date and start removing some large files from your Hard Drive to free up space and enable your Mac to run smoother.
