Q: updating to photos. Photos won't open and mac won't shut down

upon opening of photos (after upgrading), it is stuck and is taking days to open. Photos and my computer can't be shut down. It gives the message "photos is creating or opening a library, cannot quit photos while it is creating or opening a library"

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

No. I had my photos backed up before the update. I braved it and did a force reboot. Opened the app and it all worked.

I have the same problem, what do you mean you braved it and did a force reboot?

Apple menu ==> force quit - then reboot and try again

Don't force reboot just force quit Photos.  Then launch Photos with the Option+Command keys held down to try to repair the library.

Is this the first time you've launched Photos?

Nope - that did nothing - it still hangs even when holding the option+command keys while opening it.  It acted no different - and is doing nothing.

No new updates recently - nothing I can think of that would work.

One thing I did notice - I could never get the Share by iMessage to work

Try to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store and then open the iPhoto library and rebuild its database and repair its permissions via the First Aid feature. Restore the iPhoto Library from your backup if need be.   Then drag the repaired iPhoto library onto the Photos icon in the dock to convert it to a new, Photos library.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I had this problem too. I couldn't get it to open for weeks. I did 4 things.

    1. I finally updated my iPhone ( not sure if that pertains to this photo problem)

    2. I force quit everything open. Then shut down my laptop for about 5 minutes.

    3. After I turned my laptop back on I signed into iCloud on my laptop and then on the iCloud.com website in Safari

That photo library loaded right away.

    4. While I still had photos/icloud/safari open I opened iPhoto. It took maybe two minutes to load. But all my pictures are there.

    I hope this helps
