Q: "Add Image to Photos" in Safari not working. Any thought why? OS X (10.3.3)

Hey team, when I bring up the contextual menu in Safari and select "Add Image to Photos" nothing happens. Is it supposed to behave in the same way iPhoto did? Any thoughts welcomed and encouraged, thanks!

I think this has gotten deeper than either of us expected but I think I'm making progress, so thanks for hanging in there with me.  Based on your instructions, I think I was able to run REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS and REPAIR DISK on the startup disk in recovery mode.  The reason I am uncertain is that I'm not sure I used the correct volume(?)  I have 2 volumes listed in DISK UTILITY as Macintosh HD.  I think the second indented one should be the startup, but it is identified as MOUNTED ENCRYPTED PARTITION: MACINTOSH HD (it was also locked and I somehow figured out how to unlock, which then allowed me to select REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS).  Bottom line, the original issue with Photos still exists.

If you've got File Vault enabled then that's a game changer.  I've stayed away from that for a number of reasons and have no exprience with troubleshooting such a drive.

Same exact issue? Same exact answer as marked solved by the original post!

Hi Larry, Yes, same exact issue.

    To test,

    - I created a new library and imported 12 photos into it as a starter.

    - From a safari web page I chose a jpg picture that I wanted to store, right clicked (two finger clicked) on it and got the context menu dropdown

    - I then clicked on "Add Image to Photos".

    - The context menu dropdown then flickered a couple of times quickly and then disappeared. I observed nothing else.

    - I went over to the Photos application and could see no change from before doing the above steps. Looking at both the "Photos" and "All Photos" albums, there were still just the same 12 photos in the library as before.

If you have more than one "Photos" library defined on your system, when you do "Add Image to Photos", which library does the picture get loaded into? Does one of them need to be open at the time?

Maybe there's a setting somewhere that I need to set to make this work for me. Do I need to "allow" Safari to talk to "Photos"?

    Running:

    OS X 10.10.5,

    Safari 8.0.8,

    Photos 1.0.1

If the photos were not at the bottom of the All Photos window boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility, repair both the disk permissions and disk, reboot normally and try to import again.

    I booted into Recovery Mode

    Chose Disk Utility

    Chose the external drive

    - Performed "Verify Disk" = Exit code 0. "Disk appears to be OK"

    - Performed "Repair Disk" = Exit code 0. "Disk appears to be OK"

    - Both "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" are greyed out.

Chose the external drive's mounted partition

    - Performed "Verify Disk" = Exit code 0. "Disk appears to be OK"

    - Performed "Repair Disk" = Exit code 0. "Disk appears to be OK"

    - Both "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" are greyed out.

Rebooted into normal mode and retested "Add Image to Photos". Same result as before - pic not added to Photos library.

    Using Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)

None of the above suggestions have worked for me either, the "Add image to Photos" from safari is still not saving the images at all.

Launch Photos with the Command+Option keys held down and repair the library according to this Apple document: Repair Your Library.

I've repaired my startup disk, created a new test library, repaired it and still nothing. The only difference is that for me the "Add image to Photos" action launches iPhoto instead, which tells me that my library has been migrated to Photos. No photos were imported from safari.

    Thx Old Toad,

I did the repair on my library but the symptom hasn't changed. No pic added to Photos after "Add Image to Photos". I didn't really expect it to because I had previously created a new test library and that didn't help either.

I deleted all the 'test' libraries so Photos only knows about my real library. I tested "Add Image to Photos" again but still no good.

Is your Photos library designated as the System Photos Library in the Photos/General preference pane?  If not then that's probably why the Add image to Photos is not displayed in Safari.

Thanks Old Toad...this is the answer!!! (at least for me!)

It appears that when you use the 'Add Image to Photos' the image will be added to this library.  It was working for me the entire time, just adding it to the library that was defined as the System Photo Library rather than the current, active library.  I would still file this one as a bug, the system should behave as iPhoto did and add the image to the active library. (or at least give you the option of how to behave)

No - it is not a bug - it is a documented feature - all uploads and downloads use the system library

You can request that Apple change this design feature  (although I personally think it is unlikely) - https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

You are correct, it does not qualify as a bug.  It is a horrible user design.
