Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  I'll try it tonight.  It's driving me mad not being able to use AirPlay.

I had the same issue. I fixed it after speaking to Apple.

First they had ghad me disconnect and reconnect my wifi network from all devices including the Apple TV. This did not restore AirPlay.

Then within the Apple TV I was told to change the "name" field. I switched from the default Apple TV to Living Room. Then I went back to the main App/channel view. using the remote simultaneously hold down the DOWN ARROW & MENU buttons until the Apple TV light blinks rapidly, then release.  This will reboot the Apple TV, then I checked my devices (iPad and iPhones) and AirPlay was back in the control panel.

I will try this, thanks for reporting what worked for you.  I'm still AirPlay-less.

What finally worked for me (iPad 4 with iOS 8.3 and second generation Apple TV with latest updates) was unplugging all the cables from the Apple TV, shutting down my iPad, unplugging my router for a few minutes.  Then restarted everything in the opposite direction -- router, AppleTV, iPad.

When AirPlay wasn't working, I had also noticed that while I was able to use my AppleTV with videos I had in the iCloud, I wasn't able to actually see the contents of my iTunes library on my computer from the AppleTV.  So that made me more sure than ever the issue was something to do with the network connection.

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but here's hoping that among all these solutions at least one will help the next person with the problem.
