wifi doesn't work on macbook pro when not on home wifi

I recently have encountered a problem - when I take my 2013 macbook pro Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 flash drive. I have no problem accessing wifi in my office but when I travel with my macbook pro and try to access wifi at locations I have had connections with before, I am unable to search. The triangle is clearly connecting with the wifi and the drop down shows that the correct connection has been reached. However, my dropbox icon is gray which is an indication that there isn't an internet connection and I have no access to firefox or safari. Please advise.

Open System Preferences>Network>Configure>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS to use at Home, if you use it at 2 locations, just make a New Location for home.

10.5/10.6 instructions, System Preferences>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

Does Mail work out there?

This is what is in the Proxies Tab:

*.local, 169.254/16

No HTTP to HTTPS is checked. "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)" is checked.

Not sure what that means and don't see anything like the settings you suggest need to be unchecked.

And yes Mail works here. It works fine at my home office internet and email.

in a box below a line of text as follows: "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: *.local, 169.254/16" and a small box below is checked "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)."
