Q: Add or edit geotag (GPS) data with Photos App

Geotag is an EXIF metadata associated with a single photo that give the geographical location of where the photo has been taken. At this time, the geotag EXIF is fully supported by Photos (we see the location on a map) and we have the option to strip the information when we share the photo. To work with Photos, the EXIF geotagging info must be embedded with the photo when it is transferred from the camera to the Photos App.

However, many cameras don't have a GPS that sets the photo location. The geotag must be added later manually. Some photo editing software strip EXIF data (or just Geotag data) and sometimes these photo editor apps set geotag of their own (the location where the picture is edited, not the original location where the picture comes from).

It would be nice to add a geotag addition/edition feature to Photos.app.

    Hey YanikCrepeau,

    I'm missing this feature too.

It was handy because geotagging was missing or inaccurate on some pictures.

It exists with iPhoto (v9.6.1) and is now gone with Photos (v1.0).

I just upgraded my iMac early 2008 to Yosemite 10.10.3.

Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

In the meanwhile I still will be using iPhoto.

I also need this feature for two reasons:

1.) My wife and I have older digital cameras with good resolution, but no geotagging.  We need to add this information manually.

2.) I am scanning hundreds of old family photos into my (iPhoto, now Photos) library and can only add locations manually. Need this to distinguish places.

3.) Anybody know the formal "feedback" link for the new Photos app?

I too would love this feature, the ability to edit/add GeoTag information on older photos is crucial. In addition, I'd love the ability to see a map of geotagged locations for all photos in one tab (similar to the Maps tab in iPhoto). If anyone knows the feedback link for the Photos app, please post. I'd like to submit a feature request.

I was disappointed to see this feature missing too.  I guess I'll keep using iPhoto for a while too.

Now that iCloud drive keeps the photo library synced between all devices it would be nice if there was a way to edit tags, geotags, descriptions, etc.  on iCloud.com as well as IOS.  It would make iCloud drive worth the monthly fee for me.

I really miss this feature and was disappointed when I realized the possibility to manually geotag was gone (I have a reflex without GPS...).

Does anyone know if this is only temporary ?

Does apple answered about this topic ?

Apple rarely answers in these forums, since this is a user-to-user forum.

I tested to add GPS using AppleScript, but most of the EXIF field are readonly and we cannot change the GPS tags with Apple Script in iPhoto. It was possible to do that in Aperture, but does not work in Photos.

Right now, it is best to add GPS before importing to Photos.

There are work-arounds using other tools to assign the GPS data before importing, but the next version supposedely allows you to add location information. Here is more info:  https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/180288/how-to-add-a-location-to-photos -in-the-new-photos-app

The current version (Photos 1.2) has the ability to add GPS info and has been released for several months now - you are well behind on software updates

I'm still running Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, so have not been offered the Photos.app update. Maybe I should make the move....

Don't.  It still lacks major features iPhoto had.  Not sure why Apple decided to remove functionality for the customer.

Photos is installed as part of the system. You update Photos by updating MacOS X to El Capitan.

I'm not sure when this was added, but I found it last week on photos, if you click on the photo or photos and then right click and select info. You will get a window pop up. At the bottom of that window ( if none of the ones are already GPS tagged ) will show a spot where you can type in location and it will look it up and drop a pin at that address. It will say looking up.. if you let that finish, or usually just close the window and click info again it will have populated the field. Once that field is populated then you can click on the pin and move it to real location.  Also you can put raw GPS data in there  ( for example 37 23.516 -122 02.625 ) It would be very nice if Apple would make it easier to drag that pin. Also if they were to add add copy coordinates from another photo. For example my DLSR doesn't geotag but my cell phone does. Would be very nice to select the non-tagged photos right click pick a menu option to copy gps and then select the photo thats already tagged.
