Q: What to do about discoveryd

Discoveryd is working overtime consuming CPU resources, draining my battery and running my fan at high speeds.  I disabled extensions in Safari and Firefox but no luck.  All a new problem since software upgrade. OS X 10.10.3

You still have network proxies set, and I still don't know whether you tried unsetting them.

They're set now. Was there any difference while they were unset?

Linc, No proxies configured - several in the window but none checked. I don't really know where to go from here.  My temporary fix is to open Activity Monitor and quit the process when it runs away.  This seems harmless, but it's not how its suppose to work.  Thanks for your generous time and attention.  I am open to any further suggestions.  Tom

This procedure will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Back up all data before you begin, and recreate the settings afterwards.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

              Services ▹ Reveal

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.

Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go ▹ Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Thank you for posting this fix. My problem was a really loud fan and discoveryd using 98% of my cpu. I think the problem arrived with the latest OSX update but I'm not sure. I was a little intimidated by the first solution at the top of this thread but figured I could manage this short fix. Reinstalling some of the System Configuration preferences changed a few things in my Network panes but I left them. Everything is running very well. The fan is off and web-surfing seems to be faster too. Thanks again.

discovered appears to be linked to Bonjour software- I have blocked it with Norton Internet Security.  The connection details are:

Am I doing the right thing?

    Thanks

    What to do about discoveryd?

NOTHING. Keep killing it via Activity Monitor and wait for the OSX 10.10.4 update. Apple is consigning discoveryd to the dustbin of history because *THEY* can't fix it. http://www.macrumors.com/2015/05/26/apple-discoveryd-replaced-with-mdnsresponder /

For me, discoveryd only goes crazy after the computer has gone into sleep mode, then wakes back up and tries to figure out what the heck is going on. If you force-quit discoveryd, it respawns but uses ~.1% CPU. I'll save myself the headache of not going through all those fruitless diagnostics that aren't going to fix a problem with software that's internally broken.
