Apr 11, 2015 6:48 PM in response to Winston Churchillby CAcrna,They do play in iPhoto. I tried exporting them through file on the menu bar on top and I tried drag and drop. I believe they are avi, but others that are avi will play while others will not. There seems to be no pattern between time recorded, device used or file format.

Apr 11, 2015 6:57 PM in response to CAcrnaby léonie,While trying to view video imported to Photos from iPhoto I get a message that says "Photos cannot play this video because it cannot find the file." Some of the home videos will play while others will not and give me this message.
AVI movies are just containers that either can include the media to play or reference them. The error message suggests, that the AVIs that will not play have lost the link to the videos. Is your iPhoto library on a different drive?

Apr 11, 2015 7:13 PM in response to léonieby CAcrna,No, the library is on the internal drive and the videos play just fine in iPhoto. The Photos page on Apple.com says that the library for iPhoto and Photos are the same files, just with different directories. So i don't understand why one can play it and one cannot.

That is right, the libraries are using the same media files, (Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support), Photos is creating hard links to the files in the iPhoto Library. but only for files that have been imported to the library, not for files that are referenced outside.

Apr 11, 2015 8:38 PM in response to léonieby CAcrna,So I did successfully export a video from iPhoto to the desktop and then into Photos and it played just fine, no conversion required. But, it changed the date on the file to today. Worst case scenario, i can export them out and back in, but they will no longer be chronological, nor will they have a reference date. I did try to repair the library (command+option, left click), but no dice. Any suggestions for alternatives would be great
