Q: Photos and star rating??

After doing the software update and changing from  iPhoto to Photos I can't seem to figure out how to rate my photos.  The directions in "Help" say that I can go to View-Rating- etc. but I don't see that when I look at the drop down menu.  I have years worth of photos star rated and that's how I organize my smart albums.  Is there an easy way to still do this or have they removed the star rating system?

Thank you

I appreciate the "alternatives" info each of you have offered. I have been trying them as workarounds with limited success. Today in iPhoto, I was editing my shots. With a simple click of cmd+1 or 2 or 3 (etc), I could rate my shots, upgrade or downgrade the rating, and I didn't have to erase anything type any info, or do anything special. No matter what point I was at in the edit, I simply hit cmd+3 or whatever. It was so simple!! No keywords, no panels, no need to delete and retype, just cmd and the number of my choosing, which could be changed at any time very easily. This was the easiest, quickest and simplest way to rate. Why would such a great easy to use system be dumped? It sure doesn't look like using keywords is an easy alternative the way it has been implemented. No need to use alternate programs - lets just hope Apple has the sense to re-implement the star rating system.

Did you use the feedback form to send feedback?  Unless we tell them, the improvements we want may never come.

I hear what you are saying about a professional manager. But really folks are just asking for one feature---not an overly technical or complicate one---just one feature. Many amateurs (bad amateurs like me) shoot 400 photos at our kids games. We want the reduction workflow to get down to the best 20.  I don't think the design integrity of Photos would be compromised and I expect that Apple, unless proudly stubborn, will add this feature in later versions.

Or, as I've learned in this discussion, there might be a way to do it with existing features. I like the keyword solution you showed above---learned something. If the search box had ANDs or NOTs, it could almost work.

The Keyword solution is a crippled solution compared to what Aperture can already do.  It is awkward, clumsy and an inefficient model.

    Ok

Photos is certainly in no way a replacement for Aperture

You would not say that if you waded through even half of the posts that appear every day in this forum. There is quite an extensive list just of iPhoto features folks say want added to the new app (including a few it never actually had), not to mention all the Aperture ones.

What's the miss? A rating and a keyword a functionally the same thing, with the added benefit that you can export keywords (as there is a standard for those) but not ratings. You can even assign the same keyboard shortcut to the keywords as you used in iPhoto. Check out the Keyword Manager - just like iPhoto's.

There are three misses:  1) I rate a lot of photos on scene right on the camera - it makes using a smart folder to find them easier. When you shoot 1000 photos, it saves time.

    2) quickly sorting a 1500 frame album was so much faster because it took one click right next to the photo.  The photos app is clunky and takes too long to do this.  it takes more clicks, more orientation for each rating.   That means time.  It's also hassle.

    3) the star ratings are industry accepted.  there was no good reason to rid them... They are part of the standard meta data.  So now, my photos have less information than standard.

It was stupid and likely a designer that's not dealt with real shoots that thoughit this could replace aperture or even iPhoto.

You may want to consider using a professional grade DAM (digital asset management) application like  Media Pro 1, Capture One, Lightroom, Photo Mechanic or Photo Supreme.  You can lean more about these apps at  The DAM Forum.

We seem to be overlooking that this new photos app was alleged to replace aperture.   I'm still trying to figure out how.

Unfortunately, Apple never promised that.  I cannot find the email I received from Apple to announce the end of Aperture, but it said basically, what has been published here: https://photoapps.expert/tips/2014/6/27/aperture-dead-long-live-photos#.VaITvNLS psi

Will Photos.app version 1 have all the features of Aperture 3?

Very unlikely. Apple has stated that users will be able to migrate their existing libraries. They have also stated that there will be at least one maintenance release to ensure that Aperture is fully compatible with OS X Yosemite. Put those together, and it tell us that just because you can migrate, doesn't necessarily mean that you should. Since they say that you can however, that has to mean that any existing effects and metadata will be intact. I just wouldn't necessarily expect to be able to edit them in version 1. As Photos.app evolves however, at some point you should have all the same features — and of course a ton of new ones.

    • Apple made it possible to migrate the Aperture Libraries to Photos, so we can profit from iCloud Photo Library.
    • Apple released a compatibility Update to Aperture, to keep it working, while Photos still has only basic organisational features, less editing options than Aperture, and does not allow external editors.

in the long run Photos will be all we'll be getting from Apple instead of Aperture, since all development for photo photo management software is directed towards Photos.  It is not primarily meant for professionals or even dedicated amateurs but has much to offer for iPhone users.

The newest Beta versions of Photos even have a smart folder only useful for iPhone photos:  http://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/08/ios-9-beta-3-tidbits/

You're using an app designed for a family shooter with an iPhone in a Pro setting. It will always come up short. You need a more powerful app.

léonie addressed that more than adequately that so I won't comment.  There's a somewhat new app out, Affinity Photos, that appears to be as or more powerful, editing wise, than Aperture.  It's very impressive and not expensive. All you need with that is an excellent digital asset management app and, IMO, that is MediaPro 1.  With those two apps working hand in had you'll have a much better setup than Aperture was able to provide.  But those are just my opinions.

Old Toad.  I am curious if you had digital assets stored in Aperture.  If yes, did you migrate those assets to MediaOne or did you use an alternative solution path?

    Thanks

I didn't use Aperture.  I had two systems working in tandem:  1 - MP 1 and Photoshop and iPhoto.  I had additions photos in iPhoto so I converted my iPhoto library to a MP1 catalog system:  iP03 - Converting an iPhoto Library to a Media Pro Catalog System

I still use iPhoto for special projects like books, calendars, slideshows, etc.
