Macbook Pro slow all of a sudden

My mid 2012 Macbook Pro has recently and suddenly become cripplingly slow for no obvious reason. I normally have Chrome and firefox open at the same time and they both run simultaneously very smoothly, up until four or five days ago. Now, launching any application is far slower than it used to be and I see the spinning beachball of death far too often and for the tiniest littlest things, like if I right click a link or something the little options bar won't come up until the beachball has stopped.
Watching videos on youtube is almost impossible as the video lags at times for no reason and the sound will keep going but the video will stop and all i'll be able to do is move my mouse. Or sometimes the video just stops all together. This is with a FULL buffer bar! While scrolling down webpages I am also met with lag a lot of the time. It has made my laptop unusable at times. I have tried reseting the SMC and PRAM to no avail. And If I shut my laptop lid and leave it on I come back to the fan running very loudly and the Macbook being very hot even with nothing running. I updated my software about 2 days ago after the slowness started happening and the update took two hours just to install even though it said "15 minutes remaining". Obviously, the update did not work. At the worst of times, clicking on anything results in the beachball. I have restarted my macbook multiple times and sometimes it becomes usable for a while before eventually lagging with literally everything I do.

Please help in any way you can! 😕 😢

Thanks in advance!!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Do two things:

Download and post an Etrecheck Report:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Run an Apple Hardware Test:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

Ciao.

I've done the longer AHT test and it has come back with the some results, no trouble found. So far no change has occurred in any way. The start up still takes a lot longer than it used to and applications still take a long time to launch.
Do you have any other possible solutions that I should try? Should I do another etrecheck or maybe I need more ram?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Thankyou so much for replying! I saw that you had fixed someone else's MBP who had a similar problem to mine when I was looking up how to fix this before. Here are the last few instances where I saw the beachball.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Apr 13, 2015 4:33 PM in response to OGELTHORPE

I repaired the disk multiple times both in and out of the recovery partition and everytime it says that everything is "Ok". So I guess I need to take it into a shop to get repaired? I don't think there's anything on my computer that i'm worried about people seeing, unless you can view search history or something haha.
Is there anything else I can possibly do that might help? I would really prefer not to send it in for repairs both because of the cost and because I live in New Zealand and we don't have any apple stores whatsoever here, so I would have to send it to a place that doesn't specialise in Macs.

Hello, Ima_Wizard.

I´ve been having exactly the same problem since early May. Have you found the solution to it?

I resseted my Mac and erased everything on it but it did not solve the issue. when i tried to install IOS Again it took ages and it stayed like that for hours until i removed the hard drive and intalled it with another Mac.

If you havent done it i wouldnt recomend erasing the hard drive because it doesn´t make a diference.
