Photos Optimize Mac Storage: When?

At what point will Photos remove the high res photos from the mac when "Optimize Mac Storage" is enabled? Honestly, I'd rather they just remove the high res from my drive for all of them immediately. But since that's not the case I'm wondering what the available free space threshold is.
