How on earth do I send photos via the new "Photos" application???

I'm using a new iMac. Very fast cable connection (Comcast). The newest software on all Apple products I own (10.10.3 and iOS 8.3). I do not need to update any software.

Now, with that said, I am so incredibly frustrated. How do I email photos using the "Photos" app like we always have with "iPhoto"??

To clarify, I am selecting three simple photos to email to a friend. I have all 3 selected, and then I click on that box (I don't know the official name of the box, but it's the square thing with an arrow pointing up out of it). When I click on that box, *THAT* is where I should see an option to email. But I don't. This is what I see instead:

iCloud Photo Sharing

Messages

AirDrop

Facebook

Flickr

More

None of those options are what I want----I want to EMAIL someone. So I click on "More". Clicking on "More" launches a System Preferences menu for "Extensions". Huh???? Wow am I confused. Anyway, so I sit here staring at the "Extensions" box, and I do see my email program in there (Outlook---I do NOT use Mail). Outlook is "greyed out" and is not clickable. But I do see that Outlook does indeed have a check mark next to it already.

Folks, at this point I am so lost and frustrated I'm ready to scream. I've been a heavy Apple user since 1985. That's THIRTY YEARS! I've never used a PC---ever. I have been Mac all the way, through all of their ups and downs. And it's so frustrating to me that a user like me can not figure out something that SHOULD be incredibly easy.

I would sure appreciate some help so that I can just email photos from "Photos" just like we've always done with iPhoto.

(PS: Yes, I know that I can drag photos out of Photos and plop them down onto the Desktop. Then I can create a new email, and click "attach", and bring those emails into the email. However: 1) That's too clumsy and way too many steps, and 2) It does not allow us to choose from small/medium/large/actual size. I also discovered that I can't even click and drag a photo out of Photos and into an email. It just bounces back. Super, super frustrating!!!!). Thanks for any assistance.

Really Bali? You think that Apple is wise to roll-out software that disregards the number 1 email application used globally.

Many people don't have the choice of which application to use, as only certain ones are supported by their employers or organizations - but you seem to think that it's ok if Apple disregards that since it's old. It might be nice for Apple, but it's not nice for their users.

Microsoft entrenched itself in the business world a long time ago offering package deals and integrating their products in such a way as to make them almost indispensable. But at $399.00 for the standard office Suite it's hardly cheap compared to Apple Mail which is free. Apple have done their utmost to make their applications compatible with Windows while Microsofts' only concession was to produce Microsoft Office for OSX in an obvious attempt to get an even larger slice of the market pie. Microsoft Office for OSX 2016 was a disaster and it took months for Microsoft to release patches and updates to address the issues Mac users were experiencing. If you are experiencing such compatibility issues why are you not running a Windows environment via Boot Camp or Parallels. If it's because you like the other features/applications of a Mac then you need to keep your Microsoft software up to date too. As to Apple "disregarding" older Microsoft products they have done exactly the same with many of their own products, in some cases abandoning them entirely, e.g Aperture, iPhoto and iWorks to mention a few but this is the price of progress. Many more Mac users than Windows programs users have complained about the difficulties of the transition to El Capitan. Many third party apps have had to be updated/upgraded at the Mac users cost, AirMail 2 (which I use incidentally) and may be more suitable for your cross platform needs, Carbon Copy Cloner, Clean My Mac 3, deeper, Solitaire Till Dawn, Better Snap Tool, Find any File etc, etc the list goes on and on and Outlook is just another it just costs a lot more. I used to use Microsoft Entourage once upon a time but that was curtailed by Microsoft. The plain truth of the matter is technology continues to advance and we must advance with it or be left behind. Whether it is motivated by planned obsolescence, fashion, profit or a genuine attempt to improve the quality of our lives is a moot point.

Thanks, but that is not an option for me. I use HTML mail and not the "Rich Text" which Apple Mail uses. I do not know why Apple has chosen to not offer HTML email when it seems as if everyone else on the planet is. I love Apple--I truly do. But it's things like this which really drive me nuts. To think that Apple made the decision to STOP people from emailing directly from Photos if you use Outlook is just ridiculous in my opinion. It was not that way before, with most versions of iPhoto. I used Outlook and I could email from within iPhoto all the time, no problem. I can only hope that they will bring it back, because something like this will not force me to switch to "Mail'. Ugh......I have a love/hate relationship with Apple that is now in its 32nd year.

Then until MS updates OutLook to work with El Captain and Photos you can use the media browser if your Outlook it up to date or export to a desktop folder and use from there - the required changes to Outlook are MS's responsibility not Apple's - as Software moves forward updates have to be made and only MS can make the required update to Outlook - they finally did update so the media browser can be used I understand

Hi Larry,

Thank you for the suggestions. I am, however, already doing those. And I'm not sure who to "blame", point the finger at, or whatever.....But all I can tell you (as I'm sure you are already aware) is that iPhoto allowed me to email photos from within the iPhoto app. I don't think that is something that Microsoft worked on----that would be a bit odd having MS employees working inside the Apple Campus. So I'm fairly certain that Apple folks are the ones who made it possible to email photos from within iPhoto, even for those of us using Outlook for our email "client" (I dislike that word....I prefer "application" but I've noticed a lot of people like to use the other term, so I always try to remember to change my words around when I come here).

So like I said earlier, it would be really fantastic if Apple could bring back the ability to email pictures and videos from within Photos just like they did in iPhoto for so many years (for those of us using Outlook). That was so incredibly simple and natural, and they even allowed the user to choose the size as well as a few other things. I think we'll see it again someday, as long as Apple customers keep the pressure on Apple by posting in this forum. That way, they'll get to see how many of us really would like to have it. (Yes, Apple does indeed monitor these forums. I see that you are a regular here at Level 9, so I made an assumption that you would write back and say that they don't monitor these forums. They do, and all i can say is that I signed a NDA. And no, I'm not violating it by saying what I just said).

Hi BaliMac,

Unfortunately, this does not work. My email application is Microsoft Outlook. When I right-click on a photo in Photos (which yields the same result as clicking on the "share" icon which is the square box with an arrow pointing up out of the box), nowhere in those options is Outlook. If I click on "More", strangely enough, it takes me to System Preferences ---> Extensions. The really weird thing about this is that the icon for Microsoft Outlook is indeed there! Not only that, but the box next to it is checked. However, I have no control over it whatsoever because it is "greyed out" and not clickable.

I have played around with this for hours, and the Genius Bar unfortunately did not have any geniuses working today. But what I did discover on my own is this: If you go into Apple Mail and make THAT the default Mail application, then "Mail" will indeed show up in the Share menu. Not only that, but it will work. However, when I remove Mail as being the default mail application and I change it to Microsoft Outlook as the default email application, then we get what I just described above: The Outlook icon is there, but it is greyed out----thus, not clickable/selectable.

So if I am putting all of these things together (what I've discovered on my own and I've read from you guys in this thread), my only options are as follows: ;

1) Dump Microsoft Outlook and switch to Apple Mail (no can do---I very much prefer HTML email and I just don't understand why Apple doesn't offer it)

2) Figure out what photos I would like to include in an email, drag them to the Desktop, then open each one, one-at-a time with Preview, use "Tools" to reduce size (otherwise the photos are enormous), and then drag these photos into my Outlook email (or attach them).

Does it sound like I have this right? The one thing I wasn't sure I understood was when someone said to "Export" the photos to the Desktop (or wherever). Do I gain any type of advantage in terms of time if I export them to my Desktop as opposed to clicking/dragging them to my Desktop? If so, please advise.

Thanks a lot! This has been a huge frustration for me.

pretty much

except you can certainly use MS Outlook for all of your email except sending photos and use mail for photos only

and yes the options are as I outlined them

Then until MS updates OutLook to work with El Captain and Photos

[1] you can use the media browser if your Outlook it up to date

[2] or export to a desktop folder and use from there

[3] or use Mail at least for photos

- the required changes to Outlook are MS's responsibility not Apple's - as Software moves forward updates have to be made and only MS can make the required update to Outlook - they finally did update so the media browser can be used I understand
