my I-phone 4S is not able to connect to wi-fi.

Have lost ability to connect to any wi fi. Sometimes the phone makes an attempts, sometimes the Wi-Fi option is grayed out and sometimes the whole phone locks up. Have tried switching off, disconnecting etc, but have not yet re-set networks in case I lose data or contacts in the process .Any suggestions?
