Importing RAW file in Mac OS X 10.10.3 using Photos

I am hoping someone who has been using Photos for Mac OS X has figured out where the RAW files are stored in Photos.

Basically, the following are problems that am facing;

  1. My RAW files are not appearing in Photos program on both my iMac and MBP. I never used to have this problem with iPhoto.
  2. When I import photo files that have a RAW twin, I can see the JPEGs marked 'J' in Photos but the RAWs are not displayed.
  3. in Photos I have to import videos separately from my camera. It never used to be like this in iPhotos.
  4. Searching for help on Mac OS help section does not bring any RAW file literature to refer to. Does this mean that this feature has been killed in Photos?
  5. Using the name Photos to search for solutions is a big problem since this word is generic and results in unwanted results not specific to Mac OS. I have faced the same problem with programs like Pages and Numbers, the nouns pages and numbers are generic and always bring things nothing to do with Mac OS.
  6. I prefer using programs designed for Mac by Apple to manage my files, this way it makes the handling easier. If there is someone who has a comprehensive manual that details all the features for Photos, I would appreciate it. Some good folks here helped me with manuals for Pages & Numbers.

On another note, I have a feeling that Photos is a stripped down version that was compromised to work across platforms.

Lastly I hope moderators will not delete my post, I have checked, there is no violation of rules here. I just want to be able to use a new program that comes with the Yosemite update.

I am running an update on the above post. I am not going to edit the initial post so that others can follow what has been happening.

On the good side, I have figured out the following about Photos;

  1. Images that are marked with a 'J' indicate that they have 2 formats (RAW & JPEG)
  2. Images in Photos Mac OS X 10.0.3 will open JPEGs by default.
  3. When you go into the Image tab, there is an option to keep the RAW as original. Selecting this option will toggle the format as shown below.

4. The option to edit images using an external editor is no longer available in Photos. Basically there is no longer an advanced menu in Photos as shown by the images below;

Just another update on Photos.

It looks like there is a bug with the Photos app/program. The program cannot distinguish previously imported videos from new videos when an SD card or camera is connected to the Mac. This never used to happen with the iPhotos app.

I use a Sony Alpha camera and I imported 20 videos from my camera in the morning and shot 11 more videos in the afternoon. Upon reconnecting my camera to my Mac, I had 31 videos shown as New Videos in Photos. For interest sake, I clicked import and the Photos app imported all the videos and stored them in the Photos library.

The videos are not shown in Photos but when I trace the location from Finder, they are saved in 2 different location with different folder structures. This problem makes an infinity video import loop that drains storage on the Mac.

I hope someone from Apple will attend to this bug. I have submitted a report and I hope someone will address this. I think just rebranding iPhotos to photos would have been a great idea rather than reinventing a perfectly working wheel.

I can't quite see to get this to work with a library of mostly processed RAW images, imported from Aperture. I simply see a photo, not 'J' or 'W' in the bottom right hand corner (all meta data enabled under View->Metadata). The Image->Use RAW as Original is greyed out. However, when I open an edited (in Aperture before import) image, I can revert to original and I see what I assume would have been the RAW image. I also see a 'RAW' symbol in the Info and in the centre of the banner above the image when viewing on its own.

All very confusing.

Exactly the same issue I have since imported my Aperture Library in Photos.

I have Jpeg and Raw "twin" pictures but I see only Jpeg ones and the option to "Use RAW as original" is always greyed out.

Contacted Apple Care for support, I did several tests with them through the phone, reimporting the library more than one time and trying several tricks they proposed but at the end nothing worked.

I got then in contact with a supervisor that told me that, according with the tests done, it's not a problem of my Mac but it's an issue with their software and he was going to contact the SW experts and contact me back with the solution...It's one month since the last call and nothing happened.

I am going to call again this week and see what's happening.

In the meantime still using Aperture and looking for a good replacement of it, that seems to be NOT Photos (too limited).

Hope it helps.

You can only switch between RAW and JPEG in the Edit panel.

The big problem is that switching between JPEG and RAW as original image file requires, that Photos will render the image again from the RAW master file . And that is not possible for Aperture edits. So you will have to revert to the original before you can switch between the RAW and the JPEG original image file. The migration from Aperture to Photos is lossy, if you want to add further edits to Aperture edits.

How Aperture content and metadata migrate to Photos

Photos and organization:

Photos and movies migrate without changes. Photos migrate with the adjustments and filters you applied in Aperture. You can't modify the adjustments in Photos, but you can revert to the original image.

Has anybody found a solution to this problem?? Just switched to Apple buying my 1st MBP, and this seems a total disaster, lost all my work (RAW files) and am in India for a few weeks to take pictures and don-t know how to save them:

When importing JPEG+RAW (NEF Nikon) at the same time and from the same photo, the RAW format disappear.

I have tried different ways of importing my pictures but nothing seems to work. The strange thing is that when I first got the laptop, I was able to keep both files. The only thing that might have change is that I downloaded the ADOBE LIGHTROOM 5 on a trial version, but doubt that could come from here.

When importing:

trial #1: I imported a photo from SD card with RAW + JPEG format. Before I created a folder in FINDER to organise them, the "J" shows up after import as if there were 2 files, but the option given from someone of "USE RAW AS ORIGINAL" is grey and not usable. When I send the files (RAW + JPEG) to the FINDER document, only JPEG file appears. RAW disappeared and is not traceable anywhere. LOST

trial #2: I imported a photo from SD card with RAW format only. When I send the file (RAW) to the FINDER document, it is transformed automatically to a JPEG file. RAW disappears. LOST

trial#3: when importing the picture (RAW files alone) to PHOTO LIBRARY, it stays in RAW but is not accessible from LIGHTROOM in that folder??

trial #4: when I create a subfolder in PHOTO , separate from PHOTO LIBRARY, the RAW file is also transformed in JPEG, RAW disappears .

What is this mess?

I am desperate to find a solution, am i doing something wrong during the import process or is it a FLAW from apple, in which case would be quiet a big deal considering it could affect quiet a lot of people??

Disappointing...

Thanks for letting me know ASAP.

I have changed my workflow. I shoot (EOS 7D) in both RAW+JPG. In the past (iPhoto) I was able to select only the JPGs and import them into iPhoto. The RAWs went -through Adobe Bridge/Get Photos from Camera- to an external hard drive and could be developed with several different RAW developers (Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom/Aperture/DxO Optics Pro).

Since Photos does not distinguish between RAW and JPG, I copy all files (RAW+JPG) to the external drive, then manually create two folders (per kind) and import only the JPGs into Photos.

Suggestion to do so came from this topic: How to import only JPG (i.e., leave RAW on camera)
