osx 10.10.3 large jpg images can't be displayed in Preview

I have a iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB Graphics card. Since the upgrade to OS X 10.10.3 when I open a large jpg image using Preview it opens the image in the window for a split second and then displays a grey window and the image can't be seen. The grey that is displayed is the background colour used in the window, and if it is changed from grey to say green in the Preview preferences that is what is displayed in the window in the foreground. If I then use the Preview Tools Show Magnifier and scroll around the grey area of the window it displays the image correctly as you move the magnifier around the picture It seems that the image is in the background and the background window colour is in the foreground obscuring the picture. If I go to Preview View Thumbnails the image is displayed correctly on the left side. This problem doesn't show up with jpg images that I have tested that are in order of 5 mbytes, but the problem occurs all the time with images I have taken with a Sony A7R camera and are in the order of 18 mbytes and greater. I had no problems with Preview displaying these images before the upgrade to 10.10.3.

I can't trip Preview up in Yosemite. I took a .nef RAW image from my Nikon D800 and saved it as a TIFF, and a level 12 JPEG. By default, the camera sets the resolution to 300 dpi. Sizes are 108.5 MB for the TIFF, and 20.9 MB as a level 12 JPEG. Since it was a portrait mode image, I also rotated it 90º to make it a landscape image, and reset the resolution to 72 dpi (not resampled) and saved it again as separate TIFF and JPEG images. Preview displayed all of them without issue.

I normally only shoot RAW, so haven't tested shooting a JPEG right on the camera and seeing how that displays.

I did some more testing this morning and found that the image has a resolution of 350x350 dpi and is 7360x4912. I opened the original image in Gimp and didn't change anything and exported it with the original values of dpi and saved it to desktop as a Jpeg. Preview was then able to display the image correctly.

Here is the original Exif data as reported by the Preview Inspector.

I can't see anything in Exif data that could be the problem.

Thanks, ekalceff,

I did get the image, but you had put it into the email as an HTML image inline with the text. So it may be inconclusive as the image is rewritten into the body of the email, and may have fixed the image in the process, just as when you saved it out to a new file from Gimp.

But just to note, it did display as expected in Preview under Yosemite, 10.10.3.

If you'd like to try one more, right click on the original image and choose to compress it. Then send the .zip file. That way, the image will get here unaltered.

Well, phooey. The original image also displayed as expected in Preview. So there is an issue with OS X on your system somewhere, but it may be difficult to track down.

Just as some sort of starting point, create a new account and login to it. Try viewing the image in Preview and see if it works correctly, or if you get the same result.

If I open the image that doesn't display correctly in Preview and then go to File menu while holding the option key it gives you a Save As option. If I save as a Jpeg-2000 format and then use Preview to open the Jpeg-2000 image it displays correctly. I tried all the other possibilities of saving i.e. PNG,PDF,Tiff,Open Exr they all work correctly. I then used Preview to open the Tiff file I just created and then saved it as a Jpeg file and it doesn't display in Preview (just flash's briefly) then is hidden with the default Window background colour. I notice that the DPI of the jpeg-2000 image is 72, but was 350 DPI in my original jpeg image. When I previously exported the image from Gimp as a Jpeg that one opened and it has DPI of 350. I notice in the Exif data I posted previously that the RecommendedExposureIndex: 160 & SensitivityType: Recommended exposure index (REI) are not in the Exif data when saved from Gimp. I also notice that the jpeg-2000 image doesn't show any Exif data at all from Preview. The conclusions I have come to so far are 1) Problem has to be in Preview, 2) Something in the Jpeg image is causing Preview to play up, (could be Exif data) 3) Some other factor is also involved as the jpeg image works when you tried it for me on your OS X 10.10.3. I will try to remove Exif data from original file to see if it will work then.

I would go with number 3. I tried your original image (all Exif data and the original resolution left as is), and various file types and resolutions of various images. All open in Preview without issue.

Have you reinstalled Yosemite in full to see what happens? If not, make a complete, restorable backup of your drive first, then reinstall the OS. Test again.
