I have used Aperture for 10 years. It was easy to add watermarks and the editing seemed more sophisticated. Why does Apple continue to screw up great software suites and workflow by dumbing things down? I don't want to add a plugin. I just want professional functionality. Come on Apple! DO an update!
there is no watermark in Photos
Aperture is a professional application and Apple has discontinued support of it

Photos is not a professional application and you are probably never going to get professional functionality from it, it is a consumer application and is very different than Aperture - it certainly is not a replacement for Aperture although many people have found that with extensions and constant addition of new features that it is an acceptable alternative - if it is not for you then you need to move to other software like LightRoom or other - RANTing will change nothing
Apple is not here and this it certainly no place to tell them that using a consumer program should give you professional features - it does not and never will be

This discussion is two years old. Photos is now version 2.0. In Photos on Sierra you can use the Mark Up Photo editing extension to add graphics overlays to a photo. Markup is part of Sierra and has been extended to support Photos as well. Photo editing extensions are a part of the power of Photos. It comes with a basic set of great editing tools , and you configure it to your needs by adding further extensions you are most likely to need. They are easily accessible from the Edit panel in Photos.
I have not found any watermark option in Photos.
Export the photo from Photos and add the watermark in any editor, that supports transparency and layers, and lets you add graphics overlays, for example Preview, Pixelmator, Photoshop Elements, ...
Thanks Léonie, I was looking for a batch option. Not sure I am going to do it though as most of the info I have read makes the point that if someone wants to steal a photo, they will do so anyway and just remove the watermark via graphic editing software. Thanks!
In iPhoto you could install the plug-in Border-FX. That will let you batch export watermarked photos from iPhoto with several styles of watermarks, annotations, and borders.
If you still have iPhoto, consider to install his plug-in and use iPhoto for water marking. BorderFX - iBorderFX iPhoto
For example, a text watermark:
This is just what I was looking for! Unfortunately, I upgraded last evening and now have Photos instead of iPhoto. Bummer, I am sure that there will be a version of BorderFX for the new Photos. Thanks!

The upgrade to MacOS X 10.10.3 does not uninstall iPhoto. You can simply launch it again, because the iPhoto library will continue to work, even after you upgraded it for Photos.
I am sure that there will be a version of BorderFX for the new Photos. Thanks!
I hope so too! 🙂
You're welcome!
