Q: OS X Yosemite Update Issues

Are there any update problems with OS X Yosemite people are experiencing? When I updated my work computer some of the software programs are missing the command button images at the top, like Mail and Safari. How can I fix this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Download and reinstall the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.

My experience has been horrendous after the 10.10.3 update.

Ever since I updated, my system is just not working properly. I need to power down my iMac frequently just to get Mail or Firefox or iTunes to work correctly. On working days (when I use my computer only in the evenings) I am doing at least 3 to 4 restarts. On this weekend I must have done 6 restarts so far.

The Finder is just freezing up on me and, I suspect, preventing the above three apps (which are what I use mostly) from working correctly. If I try to open a window (e.g. Utilities), I get a spinning gear in the right-hand bottom of the window and files just don't show up in the window. If I insert a disc and then eject it, the disc icon stays on my desktop even after the disc has ejected, and a restart is required.

I have rebuilt permissions a dozen times. Nothing seems to  help. Force quitting any app (including the Finder) results in a freezing up of my system and I have to power down to get back to using the computer.

This is just awful. Undoubtedly the worst ever update from Apple as far as I'm concerned. And I've been using Mac's since 1990.

Frustrated and irritated and more than disappointed.

Yes! I feel your pain David. ever since I updated the software I am having the exact same issues.

I Have talked with three different tech support pepole and they finally gave up gave me a "senior" tech support guy and he couldn't fix the problem. I kept asking him why the tech support doesn't read the community support forum because EVERYBODY is having problems with this new 10.10.3 update. He said they weren't aware of any issues. BS !! I think everyone should bombard the call center and complain until they fix it.

I Can't even connect to my computer anymore, even after I restart, reboot and yell at the blasted computer!

i keep restarting the WiFi over and over and it still won't open.

This has been said about every OS X update ever. A handful of people always have issues either through incompatible third party software, waning hardware or just unhappy about new features/deletion of old features. Next update will be said to be the worse. If you post some technical info about your issue, someone may be able to help you.

    Cheers

As regards to 10.10.3 update. I too am having problems with this update. My app store shows this update and I try and download this update 10.10.3 and it starts downloading. The problem is that it stops downloading at some point and resets itself without installing itself, but still shows itself ready to be downloaded. It is very frustrating as it takes several hours on my slow connection. I have attempted to install this update for several days now at several different times. in the app store it shows that it was installed, but at the same time it shows it waiting to be installed in the "available updates" notification center. Upon checking "About This Mac" to still shows the older version 10.10.2 . Is  there any way to resolve this or get the update some other way?

This does not help. It just directs me back to the update, which then tells me I am trying to reinstall the complete OS X Yosemite which is already installed on my computer. It then wants to install the complete install again with the update, which is over 5 GB of data.

Petermacs link should take you to a downloads page which when pressing the Download button will start the process off and be visible from the little download window top right in Safari (if you are using that browser)

It is a 2GB update so will take a little time depending on your broadband speed

    Good luck

Yep,  I updated 10.10.3 on April 12, 2015, and it completely killed Safari on my system (MacBook Pro, Retina).  Immediately after the update, Safari either doesn't load web pages, or takes forever to do so.  I'm convinced this is an encryption issue, but six (count 'em 6) chat attempts with Mac techs has proven to be futile - each time they come up with a different and failed strategy to fix the problem.  The last attempt focused on a reinstall of OS Yosemite, which of course failed, because after the restart and directing a reinstall, I got a message that I can't update OS Yosemite because the latest update has already been installed.  This is not only a significant inconvenience, but also a tremendous loss of productivity, given that I teach several courses online and absolutely rely on my system for doing my job.  Thank goodness Chrome hasn't been affected by the bug-filled 10.10.3 update.

Have not seen any bugs yet. We run over 20 Macs here, all on Yosemite 10.10.3

I appreciate your reply, but I'm not making this stuff up, nor do I suspect others are who have posted here and elsewhere about the 10.10.3 issues.  Ultimately, all of our individual experiences (including yours) are anecdotal, but that doesn't mean that the problems aren't real.

Any suggestions for getting around the reinstall "catch 22," i.e. can't reinstall Yosemite when the latest version is already installed?

When you go to the App Store and ask to download Yosemite (The full OS, not update)

    what error do you get.

i have tried this and yes it does note that it is already installed but does give you the option to continue,

    and download the full installer.

Once that has downloaded, and before you install, look in your Applications folder for 'Install OS X Yosemite.app'

make a copy of it on another drive /USB so you don't have to download it again.

I finally got this to work after finding the location(s) of the previous attempts to download this update, then deleting the stalled/stopped downloads; then re-downloading the 10.10.3. It seems that for some reason the system was reading all downloads as a corrupted install and was applying those results to all the downloads that were pending and ongoing. Once all previous attempts were cleared, the download completed without the system continuing to regard it as a corrupted downloaded update. Your directions to utilize Safari to effect the update was instrumental in effecting this success. Thank you very much.
