Q: Cannot export original file type from Photos

Trying the new Photos app. There seems to be no way to export original files out of the app. Does anyone know how to do this if I've missed this?

Drag a video out of Photos and it does not drag/export original

I am not obsessing with filenames, they are just a pretty normal thing to use in a day to day workflow.

Sorry, I have actual work to do, the rest of your comments are just patronising, pedantic and tiring.

Yes, but export the original file and it does.

    But accurate...

    No, just annoying.

Then make your own shortcut key combination in the System/Keyboard/Shortcuts preference pane:

Just choose your own key combination.

None of the above discussion has been correct or helpful in my case. My daughter took a video for a class project using my iPad. I shared it via iCloud with my laptop. I need to get the video file onto a jump drive. I have selected the video, clicked on file and export. The resulting choices (including export original file) are not highlighted and therefor cannot be selected. I also tried the "create a keyboard shortcut" noted previously in this thread with no results. If there is an additional script or some other technical step, then that would be helpful to know. Sharing options are only relevant to social media or emailing/texting what I assume will be a compressed, degraded file.

In order to get the required result I have resorted to uploading the files to my Google Drive account, and I have no idea if the file will be compressed. In fact I don't even know how to figure out what the actual file size is for any of my media files. If Apple really wants to send me to Android land, they're doing a great job. If you have snarky replies about my limitations in this matter or a desire to parse my grammar, as above, save it. If you have a helpful thought, please share. I get what Apple is trying to do and how this relates to cloud storage and social apps, but I do not care to pay for additional cloud storage. What I do want is direct access to my files.

I had hoped that I could still use an older version of iPhoto, but apparently not. I'm running Yosemite, and I have iPhoto 9.6 on my machine. Obviously I do not use it often, but it no longer even opens.

Thanks for posting this. I hope it helps someone. I just find it utterly tedious having to do this because Apple have hashed the software. The last time I made a shortcut was on System 9 ;-)

Mac Fish, I'm not sure why this method will not work for you. The 'intuitive' way when perplexed by the interface is often to drag out the file. As Alley Cat has pointed out, this appears to be no longer a valid method on your Apple app either.

You can't export it because it's not on your Mac. You don't tell us how you shared it with the laptop. If you do, we might b able to help.

Do you mean iCloud Photo Sharing or something else?

See the user tip, Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3 by Barney-15E if you want to keep using iPhoto.

Yes, I shared it via iCloud Photo Sharing. Thanks for the iPhoto tip. I'll check it out!

If you are using iCloud Photo Sharing, the shared album should appear in the "Sharing" section of the Sidebar, or if that is not visible, when the "Shared" button is clicked in the toolbar. If you want to do anything with one of its items in Photos, you need to open the album & if the item isn't already in the local Photo Library, control-click on it & choose "Import" from the popup menu.

Was looking for a solution as well and just found this out:

Alternatively, you can hold the Option key and drag & drop the photo from the Photos app to Desktop or in Finder. Make sure that you press and hold Option BEFORE clicking on the photo and dragging it out, otherwise it doesn't work.
