Just type in your Apple ID and it should pull up a list of products you have registered. Just search apple support profile and you should get one to apple's website. If it doesn't look like the apple website, I wouldn't trust it. Good Luck!

If you have setup an iCloud account properly on your mac you can get it's serial number by logging in the iCloud website you can even track it's position and lock it
If it's still have his last owners iCloud account logged-in in it , contact him
