Cut and paste works intermittently

Cut and paste works intermittently and the only way to get it to work when it stops is, sometimes, to reboot my computer. It's recently gotten worse... more frequent. Cut and paste is essential to my work and I see people just accepting that this is a glitch and I don't find anything online about a solution. Has anyone come across one? Using OS X.9.5
