Q: Your internet on life support?  Blame Photos app.

Unbelievable.

This morning my internet slowed down to a crawl.  Noticed that iMac, iPhone, and iPad all crawling.  So I turned on my iPhone hotspot and waited it out.  (That works sometimes.)  It didn't this time.  Reset modem, airport, and such three times.  Broadband would come, then go.

Then I had a theory.  Maybe it was the iMac bringing the network down, since other devices were not really being used.  Turned off iMac.  Broadband explodes to 50 Megabit and stays steady.  Turned iMac back down, internet is crawling on it's knees.

So I open up Activity Monitor.  Under the network tab, something called 'nsurlsessiond' is sending packets everywhere.  I Google this process and learn it's buddies with iCloud.

Then it hits me.  That weird 'pause for a day' button in Photos preferences.  I mean why not STOP AND START?  I'm like, "Did this thing turn on by itself?"  Opened up preferences, and yup -- Photos is trying to sneak upload what is still THOUSANDS of photos.

The problem here is that this isn't in the spirit of 'doing something in the background'.  Because it decimates what a user is doing in foreground.  This would be like if 'repair disk permissions' happened in the background... with no warning... for hours on end.

Again, unbelievable.  Hope this helps someone.

Nobody else is seeing this (or at least nobody else is reporting it which means very few are seeing it), it's a problem specific to you.

Tell me which facts aren't true.

Fact 1:  Photos app preferences are designed to upload pix/vids automatically after initially being activated.

Fact 2:  You can't stop this process but merely delay it by a day... as button clearly defines in preferences.
Fact 3:  This process is called 'nsurlsessiond'

Fact 4:  As a background process, it doesn't warn you when it's resumes uploading.

Fact 5:  Whenever I upload anything for periods of time-- the remainder of the net becomes sluggish/unresponsive to me.
Fact 6:  Google 'my internet slows down while uploading' and you see this is a common experience for Dropbox, Google Drive, whatever
Fact 7:  When Mac users suddenly have slow internet, they presume it's the ISP and not their new Photos app.
Fact 8:  This automatic uploading isn't a feature specific to any user.  Therefore it can't be 'just me' by definition.
Fact 9:  Therefore there MUST be other users who have this happening to them.
Fact 10:  Issues can happen to computer users WHILE they are unaware why these issues are happening to them.
Fact 11:  Since I've delayed Photos uploading until tomorrow, my net is working fine again.   Cause, effect.  This means that if anyone else is experiencing slow internet, they must go to Photos preferences and see if it is currently uploading files.  If you want your net back, pause it again.
Fact 12:  You're dismissing my conclusion without refuting my reasoning.
Fact 13:  It's human nature to avoid saying you're experiencing problems in public... because some rude fool might say you're stupid instead of face fact #12.

I'm only unsure about Fact 3.

I'm not arguing with you, this only happens to you and perhaps a few others who haven't yet come forward, you have presented it like it's something everyone can expect from Photos.

    Read what he wrote:

Nobody else is seeing this (or at least nobody else is reporting it which means very few are seeing it)

He's not saying it's not happening, he's saying - based on this is the first report I've seen of it - and him too - that this sounds like a local issue on your machine rather than a systemic issue.

Only if you activate the iCloud Photo Library which will require you to go to iCloud preferences (in system preferences) and actually turn it on, hardly 'automatic'

The rest of your post is largely predicated on it being 'automatic', which it is not.

    Terrence,

Is it reasonable to believe that auto background uploading of pictures may create the illusion that your ISP is slowing down?  Yes or no?

    If no, explain.

If yes, isn't it reasonable to believe many may not presume it's their Photos app slowing things down?

I said, "Photos app preferences are designed to upload pix/vids automatically after initially being activated."
You said, "Only if you activate the iCloud Photo Library - "

I say:  what part of 'after initially being activated' don't you get?

No. Read what I wrote. No one is saying that you're imagining a problem. What we're saying is that yours is the only report of the issue. And therefore, the problem is not systemic but local to something on your machine. That's all.

Please answer this question you're dodging --  Is it reasonable to believe that auto background uploading of pictures may create the illusion that your ISP is slowing down?  Yes or no?

You turned it on, that is a manual operation, the question is why did you turn it on?

My internet almost stops when Photos is loading to the iCloud! I need a T-1 line based on what has been transferred so far - still have 9/10ths of load bar to go for 3251 photos. Small amount done so far took 8-10 hours. Reminds me of initial backup of Mac to backup.

Also, I have an 8GB unit, but I can't have too many windows or apps open before memory overflows.

    I'm sad.

    I mean, I don't really understand.

You enable iCloud Photo Library. You have 200 GB of photos. How do you think they get up into the cloud? Fairy dust?

If you throttle it at say 1 Mbps, and it takes 47 months to get your photo library to the cloud, do you think that's an experience people will want?

I'm seeing this as well. I do have a 1 Mbps upload, so that is the problem, I'm sure. Photos is taking over the entire up pipe and other apps and devices are having to squeeze their requests in. Just wanted to say that Jerome isn't alone.

"You enable iCloud Photo Library. You have 200 GB of photos. How do you think they get up into the cloud? Fairy dust?"

Yeah.  This snarky tone from you and others isn't really necessary.

The issue is NOT that the photos are uploading.  The issue is that this app doesn't DIALOG BOX the user to inform them uploads have resumed, hence creating the illusion of broadband issue.
