Q: Bootcamp Windows 7 not working after Yosemite install

I have Windows 7 installed via bootcamp and after installing Yosemite, windows was no longer available via System Preferences>Startup Disk. However, it was still accessible using restart and holding alt/option. Then today I accidentally installed update 10.10.3 and now Windows is completely gone. I do not have a Time Machine Backup and have been scouring these threads for some time trying to piece together a solution to no avail.

I have seen similar threads about this topic however I have not quite found the complete solution to my specific example. Here is some info that should serve usefull to someone willing to help.

I'm guessing I should avoid all Mac OSX updates at least for the immediate future?

Please back up OSX and Windows to external disks. You do not have a recovery partition. You can get it back, if you re-install OSX.

You can do it, but back up first. It would be painful to repeat this whole process all over again.

Ok this thing is like the neverending problem. So I was on the Mac side and got distracted on the internet for a couple of hours. Something told me to use Startup to restart the computer but to remain on Mac OS to see what would happen. So I did that and now I can't get passed the password screen. I put in my password, it starts processing, and then the screen blinks and the password field is empty. And this repeats as many times as I try. Tried to reset the password using my Apple ID and it doesn't accept that either. Any thoughts?

After writing that last comment I switched back to osx to see if it would be different going back to osx from windows vs restarting osx from osx and it was the same thing. Screen blinks, password field is blank and nothing happens. Then hit restart and held alt/option, selected windows and it stayed on the black screen w/white cursor like before. Had to hold the power button to turn the machine off, turn back on, hold alt, and select windows again and then it booted normally. Also noticing that it takes longer to boot on either operating system than it used to.

Just tried using bootcamp icon in windows to switch back to osx to attempt to boot in safe mode. Windows took extra long to shut down. When it reset I held shift, the apple symbol came up, progress bar got all the way full, and then the computer shut down. Turned it back on and tried again, same result. Turned it back on and did not press anything, same result. Mac os not booting at all now.

*Correction: the progress bar only reaches a little less than a quarter of the way before it shuts down.

You will need to install OSX on an external drive (OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support) or use Internet Recovery (OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support).
