I can't get to the desktop of my MacBook Air when it is covered by open files. How do I do that?

How can I access desktop when it's covered with open items?

MacBook Air, iOS 8.3

Close the open items or move the windows.

Select Go to Desktop from the Finder's Go menu.

Thanks, Kappy. I tried the Finder thing and all it does is show me another window And I don't want to close the things I'm working on. I want to toggle back and forth. Gotta be a way!
