How did the photos get onto your iPad ?

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly in the iPad's Photos app : via the trashcan icon in the top right corner (bottom right in iOS 7 and 8) if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it (Edit button on iOS 6, Select button in iOS 7 and 8) in thumbnail view.

Photos that were synced from your computer can't be deleted directly in the Photos app, they are deleted in the same way as they got onto the iPad i.e. via your computer's iTunes - you will need to reconnect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and change your sync selection on the Photos tab and resync (to delete all synced photos try selecting and syncing just an empty folder).
