iMac 5K (OSX 10.10.3) Kernel Panic when Previewing or Opening a high resolution Image using Preview app

Summary of issue: I bought the iMac 5K Base configuration a week ago. Used it thoroughly and found absolutely no issue. But it was feeling very slow after update so I did a clean install which downloaded the installation files and process went smoothly. I downloaded some very high resolution images, which loaded fine in Safari and downloaded correctly.

Now the issue is when I spring load these high resolution photos or open them using Preview app (It was working fine before reinstall), the system kernel panics with an error log pasted below. Up to a certain resolution, it works fine. But as soon as I open an image of high resolution (e.g 50-70 MP), system stops responding and does a reboot with an error report. One image did open but the preview app showed a black screen, only appearing image when scaling the window and it refreshes.

The Images open fine in Safari and zooming around works fine. I tried making a new user account which reproduced same problem.

Also in Console, an error -60005 creating authorisation appears repeatedly at the same time around the kernel panic.

Do I need to reinstall the OS, I don't mind doing so as I have copied back my backup yet.

PS: I didn't touch the Storage Logical Volume Group, but did erase the Startup disk (Logical Partition). It's Fusion Drive.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), null

Here is Last Panic Report. Kindly see if you can point out something. To me com.apple.driver.AppleIntel5000Graphics should be causing issue. As this is iMac 5K with AMD R9 290x model.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Its a software issue and does not happen in Safe Mode. Only happening after 10.10.3 update. I don't see how it's related to refund or warranty. There are multiple threads regarding same issue and all of them have 10.10.3 update causing it. The issue is reproducible and not related to hardware (Another user with 2012 iMac reported same behaviour in another thread when updated to 10.10.3).

Apr 14, 2015 1:04 PM in response to NajamQ

NajamQ, there doesn't appear to be a software cause unless your installation of OS X is corrupt for some reason. There should be a hardware profile section at the end of the report that isn't included in your post. If you have any third party peripherals connected or third party ram installed you should remove them and test.

Apr 14, 2015 1:18 PM in response to SeaPapp

There are no third party peripherals connected. I double checked the corrupt OS issue by downloading OS X installer from App store and clean install from USB. Which reproduced the problem.

The same large jpeg files can be opened in any app other than Preview or Quickview. Even Finder doesn't like generating thumbnail when selecting the file in column view.

I haven't touched the RAM since I bought the iMac. So it's default Apple 8GB Kit. The images were opening correctly before I decided to clean install which started the problem, or I didn't pay attention when 10.10.3 updated through app store.

Also if you notice, the threads regarding the issue have started appearing in last 3 days after official release of latest update. This is not isolated case. It's an OS Bug.

Apr 23, 2015 3:54 AM in response to NajamQ

Interesting, I just had this with a 50MP image in Preview on my brand new 5K iMac.

I really didn't like this, because this is my workstation workhorse and is replacing a 2011 iMac with severe video problems (and my 2012 rMBP has video issues too!), but I was was somewhat calmed when I looked through the backtrace from Preview, because it does indeed look like a probable SW issue to me.

Apr 23, 2015 5:21 AM in response to Espen Vestre

This is an OS bug. Since it's reproducible, the best advice - so far, is to use an alternative for time being. Apple aknowledged the issue and may patch it up soon. For example some people were having boot up problems which was quickly fixed through supplemental update.

I am software configuration and change management professional, and bugs like these happen all the time. Apple may very well be backtracking the issue to it's source and personal who modified the code for the Preview app or code lines causing the problem. It's not easy to fix just one simple code line and release a patch, the whole kernel will have to be rebuilt and tested. My guess (I may be wrong) is this issue may not solve until 10.10.4.

PS: It's not just 5K but all models from 2012 and up and having same issue.

You should check to see if your MBP is covered under this repair extension program http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
