Q: Windows 8.1 Bootcamp External Mic stopped registering

Im using Windows 8.1 installed on my macbook through bootcamp. Yesterday I booted up Windows to find that the mic on my gaming headset is no longer being recognized, according to my laptop it doesnt even exist. I have spent all day looking for fixes, and it worked fine before. I am using the combined jack that MacBooks have, combining audio and microphone. The microphone still works fine on iOS, and i also tried my apple headphones with the microphone and had the same response.

Reinstalled all drivers.

Headphones are set as default device.

All drivers associated have been updated.

I even did a fresh install of Windows, which fixed nothing.

Please help!!!!

MacBook Pro, Windows 8

I have the same Cirrus card/driver set. Using the Apple TRRS jack, on the OS X side, Sound preferences shows both the Headphones, and external Microphone, while in Windows 8.1 with the same driver as you screen shows, I see the headphones. There is a microphone icon. I will check if it is the external or the internal one.

On Yosemite 10.10.3, I have full functionality of the TRRS headset. On W8.1, with the same drivers as the ones you have, the headset works, the microphone does not. The Internal microphone does all the work.

If you plug-in the headset, an entry for your headphone (is created or an existing one is used), and right click on playback, select the headset part, and then click on properties at the bottom right, you will see a Jack icon which should be green. If you know click on the recording tab, select the microphone, and click on bottom right properties and look at the jack, it does not show connected.

    1. Since you have had it apparently working, is it possible that you were using the built-in microphone all along, but were under the impression that your headset was working?

    2. If I move the TRRS microphone away from the Mac (13-in 2012 MBP), and go close to built-in microphone, which is located close to the top left of the keyboard, above the Escape key, I can see the love change when I make sounds. The TRRS microphone does not show any level change when used to make sound close to it.

the reason why i think it stopped working as opposed to just didnt work all along is that i logged into windows and teamspeak was not registering my voice any more, i interchange between iOS and windows quite often and am almost always using teamspeak.

i followed the steps above to see the jacks, and that is exactly what i see also.

so what youre saying in 2 is that the optical laser is functioning when you are using the inbuilt mic? that seems a bit odd.

No. The detection of optical and analog is done based on the plugged-in jack. Look up miniTOSLink adapter, which is slightly longer than the analog plug, and the microswitch detects this and will turn the optical part on and off. In your case, the same hardware on the OS X side can detect TRRS jacks, but Windows sees the jack, but the driver does not support it. If you have been using this all along, what I am asking is whether you are certain that you were using the microphone with the headset or the built-in microphone of the Mac? Based on my testing, it should not have worked from day you started using it.

From the previous TRRS jack link I posted, do you want to try the suggested method?

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/jj123860.aspx?f=255&MS PPError=-2147217396#jack

There is a known issue with the HDAudio.sys driver on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. It does not correctly handle simultaneous, or nearly simultaneous, jack-detection signals. You can work around this issue by plugging the device into the jack more slowly.

    Hey,

I have been dealing with this issue for some days now and it seems that without a proper driver update we have to look for alternatives.

I have razer kraken pro with integrated mic+sound in one jack. In osx ofcourse it works fine, but in bootcamp only headphones work. Im currently waiting for

To split the trrs connector to mic and sound. And then im going to put this into usb adapter. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NMXY2MO?psc=1

I hope it works - ill keep you posted.
