you can try the following
1. If you see 'No SIM' alert on iPhone - Apple Support
2. Pop your SIM card out all the way - remove it from the tray - and pop it back in
In most instances this somehow re enables the contacts and it starts working again
3. If you try this a couple of times and it does not work then you may need to visit your carrier store for a new SIM card
