How to improve a 2012 iMac's gaming performance?

For the minority of the gaming market the Mac can be a solid beast for video gaming, and mine used to be, however since upgrading to Mavericks and now Yosemite, games that ran effortlessly on the old OS X, now seem to lag and crash, all of these games are well within the realms and capabilities of my Mac and I will include the system details below, any advice or tips on how to regain performance would be great. Thanks.

iMac (21.5 inch, late 2012)

Processer: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: NVDIA GeForce GT 640M 512MB

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

If your computer used to work effortlessly, but isn't up to snuff anymore, it's probably because OS X's software has become more feature-rich.

Your iMac takes either 8 or 16GB RAM, but that RAM apparently isn't user-upgradeable. My only suggestion is kind of obvious: while gaming, make sure background processes are disabled.
