Mini displayport to displayport cable

I have a late 2011 17" Macbook Pro and I'm trying to hook it up to my HP EliteDisplay E241i monitor. I purchased three separate cables and so far all I've gotten is a blank screen. The macbook flashes when I put the cable in and I can drag the mouse off of the laptop screen so the computer definitely thinks there's a monitor there, but the display shows nothing. I've tested the monitors and cables with a separate laptop with no problems.

Anyone have any experience with this and get it working?

MacBook Pro (17-inch 2.4 GHz), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I've tried two different mini displayPort to displayPort cables and the monitor still doesn't think there's a signal, but the computer sees that there is a monitor. I don't have another displayPort monitor to try, but I think this is a HP firmware problem.

I punted and connected with a mini displayPort to DVI adapter and DVI cable.
