Q: Are Security Updates cumulative?

Just updated a MBA to Mountain Lion. I see there are several security updates: 4 for 2015, 5 for 2014, and 3 for 2013. Does the highest number for the year contain all previous for that year or do I have to install them individually?

    Kappy,

Does Mountain Lion, 10.8.5, belong to the category of what you are calling "later versions of OS X" ?

Would it be dangerous if, to be on the safe side, I try downloading and installing earlier Security Updates that are not reported as installed on my system, presumably in proper chronological order?

You said: I may have gone directly from 001 to 003 so 002 was installed as part of 003

that is correct, the way it works. Cumulative.

You should not download updates that are not in Appstore marked as updates to download; with one exception to this rule: you can download Combo updates when you want make sure that all "fallen" bits are corrected. A sort of short version of restoring OS through the RecoveryPartition.
