Yosemite very slow to boot

Mavericks and Snow Leopard booted quickly. The lag comes after the Apple logo appears, with the progress bar about a third of the way. It just hangs for about a minute or two.

When I did a verbose login, I saw about a million lines of this:

BUG in process suhelperd[203]: over-released legacy external boost assertion (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

And then one line of:

pflog0: promiscuous mode enable succeeded

There were also many lines of:

Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 10.0.1.8.58367 from 10.0.1.1:53

I've affirmed that the startup disk is selected, have zapped the NVram and the SMC, etc. etc.

Some system info:

Yosemite 10.10.2 and 10.10.3

Mac Pro 5,1, 6-core 3.33ghz, 24gb ram

Startup volume on a Samsung 850 EVO drive, mounted to a Sonnet Tempo PCIe SATA3 card.

Thoughts?

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), 24 gigs RAM, Samsun SSD on PCIe

Those messages may well be normal, nothing looks out of place to me, suhelperd is part of software update, it may be OK that it fails early during boot, it's not clear it's a problem at this stage.

Post an Etrecheck report if you want to show us what is running, just do it inside a normal boot.

http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Otherwise you could try safe boot to see if the OS is any better with third party items disabled.

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

NOTE: Many features will be disabled & the graphics will appear 'laggy' it's normal for safe mode, test as many of your regular apps as possible.

Another option is to disable login items by logging out & re-logging in whilst holding shift. It will disable login items in your account - they can delay a startup if you have auto login enabled.

My suspicion is that the BUG error message is appearing before the OS has setup it's full networking stack, so the process has issues that do not exist when networking is completely setup later on in the OS's boot. Search for the message with your own ID's removed if you want to see any other occurrences, e.g. remove the date from any log messages and remove the PID ([203] in this case) and see what Google or this site finds.

It's just a guess - if the OS is hung at that point you need to look back to earlier log messages to see what fails before that point, it may be the result of something else before this action. You may need to review other logs once boot completes too (kernel.log, system.log).

If you are worried about corrupt OS files etc you can simply backup, boot to recovery and reinstall, that will overwrite the OS files only. Your user data & third party apps will remain installed. It's a major operation so the backup is a good idea but may not be needed if all goes well.

Thanks again Drew.

I'll so some of that research in a minute.

For reasons I don't understand (but which tech support at Sonnet, maker of my PCIe card that hosts my startup SSD said was typical) my machine doesn't boot into recovery partition. I have several backups of the startup drive but would need another way to reinstall the OS (preferably without having to configure and install everything manually).

None of your disks show a recovery partition, so that explains why that fails.

Reinstalls can be done via a USB installer made with diskmakerx.com or via Apples createinstallermedia command…

Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support

You can migrate user data back after a reinstall (via Migration to Setup Assistant) but moving apps back may just restore any issues.

It may be a better idea to test install a clean OS onto another disk. See if that hangs like the current one. Internals are best, but a fast USB or Thunderbolt disk can work too for testing.

See what the other tests show (like a safe boot, disabled login items).

You appear to have SIMBL installed, I think that is out of date & should be removed - it is a 'system hack'
