Facetime and iMessage on Macbook Pro Retina display slow after Yosemite 10.10.3 Update

Hi

I recently updated my Macbook Pro Retina display to Yosemite 10.10.3 update. 😕😠I see that the Facetime and iMessage has become relatively very slow. Like for example when someone calls on my phone it takes like more than 15 seconds + to show up on my macbook. Earlier it used to be like instant!

I started seeing this problem on Yosemite 10.10.3 update only. Also the same is the story with iMessage. When I get an SMS or an iMessage from my friends it takes like a good 30 seconds + to show up on my macbook pro.

Just for your information, this is the version of macbook i am using 🙂

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

251GB Flash storage

As Suggested by someone I also tried RESETTING my computer's PRAM. That didn't seem to help either. 😢Can anyone help. If it is a genuine bug in Apple Yosemite, I'd like to file a bug in the community.

Regards

Shreyas

Guys, please look at the image capture from the Activity monitor. So all the peaks you see in the graph happened when I clicked the FaceTime to open it up. So I am sort of confident that there is something which is choking the processor when FaceTime or iMessage opens up after this new update.

So earlier whenever I got a call on my iPhone 6 it used to ring on my macbook pro immediately. Not it doesn't show up until 30 seconds. By the time I receive the users would have cancelled the call. Anyway I plan to file a bug on Apple too!

Hi,

I just restarted my computer with my two iPhones already connected to charge them (I had plugged them in after booting the time before)

This caused iTunes to load before the Finder (Appear lower in the list like your FaceTime)

Do you have FaceTime set to start as the computer Starts Up ?

Is it listed in System Preferences > Users and Groups > Your account > Login Items ?

Also is the item that is cut off by the screen grab at the top the imagent item ?

IMAgent is an app that supports both Messages and FaceTime.

IF FaceTime appears that busy I would expect imagent to be busy as well.

Also IMAgent launches when the Computer starts up (You can stop it "Listening" to all the accounts in Messages EXCEPT the iMessages one It can also not "Listen" for the FaceTime App if the app is set to Off. However the iMessages "listen" will always make it start up).

Basically IMAgent should be starting up before the apps that use it start up.

As you can see mine is well before the Finder starts up.

Barney-15E Specifically asked if you had tried the App(s) in another Mac User account. Have you tried this ?

If you don't have one create a spare or Test Account in System Preferences > Users and Groups.

Set up the My Card in the Contacts app and try Logging in in both iMessages (only) and FaceTime.

Do the apps work there ?

IF they do it suggests it is something about the settings for the usual Mac User Account.

If this does not work then it will suggest it is more like a global issue with the OS/Apps involved. (Although server issues can also be part of the issue).

If it works in the Other Account then log back into the regular account and Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.imagent.plist item

You will then need to Restart the computer so that it starts up the processes in the "right" order.

No it is not

Somehow in my system Finder etc. comes first and then Imagent. Even after deleting the PLIST it shows up much later than finder. However it shows up much before iMessages and FaceTime. Which means its okay. Also I didn't see Imagent Busy when i open FaceTime or iMessage!

Yes surprisingly it works perfectly fine there 😟 What has gone wrong here 😢 😢 I didn't do anything apart from upgrading my OS 😢

If it works in the Other Account then log back into the regular account and Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.imagent.plist item

I tried doing this. But it didn't help at all. This guy took 30 seconds like always 😟 I even filed a bug with Apple to address this 😐

If it works in another account, you have something loading when you log into your account that is interfering, or some other settings are in your account are causing it.

What is in your login items?

How about LaunchAgents-- they are in your user Library/LaunchAgents.

Or you can post the output from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Open Console and select All Messages. Click the button to clear the display. Start FaceTime and if it behaves poorly, note any console messages that are generated.

Hi,

Follow Barney-15E suggestions for the moment.

NOTES

There are three Libraries to speak off that you need to be aware of.

Open the Hard Drive icon and you should see Applications, Library, System and Users at least.

Barney-15E is asking you to look in that "first" library.

(There is another in System and one in Users/Your account Name but this one is not visible by default since Lion)

Most apps Read (And Write) to .plists which hold relevant info about the app and how it is supposed to display and react.

However with Sandboxing on one hand and iMessages being added into the mix along with it's new functions in Yosemite there are now many .plists that can effect the Messages app and specifically the iMessages Login.

If your My Card in the Contacts app is missing or has the wrong details then Messages will not launch properly.

If certain Fonts are missing or inactive the app will not launch properly if at all in some cases.

Strangely Date and Time and losing Daylight Saving time can cause issues, as the Time Stamps are then out of sync.

The Etresoft check will provide the most info.

In the past (During iChat) the GoogleTalk Video plugin and th Flash Plugin have clashed.

It also seems odd that Flash is listed twice.

When GoogleTalk first did Video Chats over the Web Login to Google they used Flash.

Then they started using their own Plug-in.

On some installs the two plugins clashed.

Having said that I have not heard of the issue for a while (At least since iChat 5)

I also don't have the PepperFlash item you have listed

User uploaded file

There are things in the list that I have not heard about or tried myself but nothing is jumping out at me as being more directly related to Messages in any way.

Barney-15E may know more.

Hi,

On this Console Log I am unsure why you are getting just a warning when this then seems to slow down the app itself.

IDS items are found in the Keychain and the ~/Library/Preferences folder both of which could be causing the issue.

I would Open the Keychain Access item in the Application/Utuilities folder and use the Repair Keychain option as a first step.

I don't know much more than that.

However, I have heard/seen reports that the citrix stuff causes problems. They seem to get it updated, but they have never been out in front of an update.

You've also got another VPN access service (Juniper) running. It is entirely possible Messages is waiting for those to connect or time out. I'm just guessing at this point.

Apr 19, 2015 1:28 PM in response to Barney-15E

Humm,

The VPN may require a proxy and Messages/iChat has never liked Proxies.

Did you try the Safe Boot ?
It will stop some of those things loading (and therefore excluding them) and does not effect Messages for FaceTime during the login process or simple chat connections.

Hey Ralph,

The problem exists in safe mode too! 😟 The only way there is no problem is if I create another account 🙂 So now my question is, is there anyway I can re-build my ID (admin ID) so that it gets back to factory settings?

Basically I want to reset my user account to it goes to the best possible factory setting. I really don't want to create another admin account and setup everything again!
