Q: frigging iTunes!

Hello!

I am using iTunes v10.7 and cannot make it to do what I want it to do.

iTunes always opens whenever I download an audio file from the internet and automatically adds it to the library, whether I want it or not.

This was not happening when using previous versions of the app but, I cannot find a way to make this version of iTunes behave as previous versions did.

The only solution seems to be downgrading iTunes which I once did but can't remember how was it done.

Any help with this issue will be welcome.

Thank you

I use iTunes 7.5  There is  button in advanced iTunes preferences which sets "Use iTunes for Internet playback" but it isn't specific as to what that means (it may just mean radio streaming).  There is no unset option so I don't want to test it. I am guessing it edits any browser configuration files so it sets each browser's settings (as we have been mentioning) to use iTunes. To unset this (at least with my version) you have to go to the browser's settings and do it there, not through iTunes which only sets it.  This kind of setting is standard behavior when installing some applications but they almost always ask you something along the lines of"Do you want to use iTunes for Internet playback?" when you are actually installing the application, with the option to say "no".

How are you downloading the files?

It reads by implication as though you are NOT downloading using iTunes. As though you are downloading them to a folder first.

If you are downloading them to a folder, you can go to GET INFO on individual files and re-map them to another default application. “Open With” drop down.

(Sorry Limnos - I didn’t realize you were not the OP).

Please refer to answer to turingtest2

For example, in Firefox, go to Options > Applications, and make sure that the entry for "MP3 Audio" is not set to iTunes.

Cannot use Firefox because of some glitch which I could not resolve even after having re-installed it many times: any page you try to open will first show an alert to the effect that there is no certificate? (or other, can't exactly remember) so that you open the page at your own risk.

(Safari and other browsers have similar settings.)

If things are opening immediately upon downloading using a browser you may also need to change your browser's application support settings.  Please refer to my reply to turingtest2.

If they are opening automatically in iTunes it is something else doing it.  If it truly is something else doing it then downgrading iTunes won't help you. Please refer also to my reply to turingtest2. It used to be possible to choose whether to have iTunes to open a downloaded audio file or not.

However, as I have already said, it is possible for a browser to be configured to automatically open a file in a second application the instant the application downloads.  Please refer to my reply to turingtest2.

Clearly something is telling iTunes to play your downloads, but that isn't a setting in iTunes, and downgrading iTunes won't change the behaviour. See above.

That is a setting in your browser that tells the browser what to do with various kinds of files.

    Do we concur?

With reference to my even older version of Safari, and web searches, it seems Safari does not have a list of association applications the way many other browsers do.  It simply presents you with the option to open files on download and then lets Finder handle it.  As for changing Finders application preferences, we're back to my first post I made in this topic.

You might need to update Safari to make the change to the Preferences.

    I'm downloading from YouTube, mainly.

That is not the issue, what I don't want is to iTunes to automatically open a downloaded audio file  and add it to the library; please read all posts.

    Aaargh.....OK.

I suggested the Safari update because it's possible the default behavior cannot be changed in the older versions of iTunes and Safari.

May I ask a question that might have been better asked earlier - has this combination of Safari, iTunes and OS X always behaved this way?

What tool lets you download from YouTube? The idea is that you watch content on the site, not copy it, or the audio from it.

Safari is losing bit by bit (or byte by byte) features it used to have before newer versions.

Finder's application prefs is not an issue

There is a small app called YouTube to MP3 which allows you to do it.

No, the combination behaved much better before.

    Newer is not necessarily better...

There are many with similar names. Likely it has a option that controls what happens with the file once it is downloaded.

I have iTunes v10.7 which offers no alternative as with v7.5.

Can't remember which was the latest version to allow to do it though; it may probably the one I downgraded to a long time ago which I referred to on my original post.
