iMac (24-inch, Early 2009). Screen flickers at random times leaving mouse keyboard unresponsive.

General Info:

iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.

Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB

Storage 999.35 GB

I have been experiencing this issue for ~ 6 months.

I'll be using chrome (Netflix) or Microsoft Office (excel) or any other task on my computer when the screen will start to flicker and flash (a bit less dramatic, but I can't find the right word). It will freeze, become unresponsive, and I'll have to hold the power button to shut it down.

What could be causing this, and how could I go on about fixing it?

I would be grateful for any kind of help.
