Old Bootcamp partition not formatting or useable

Hey everyone,

I am having a issue I can't seem to resolve.

I have deleted the NTFS or Bootcamp partition through Disk Utilities, without knowing that I couldn't do that, so now I'm stuck with a useless partition. I can not format it, resize it, or use the space.

I've been trying for almost two days now, trying to figure out how to get this work but I can't, it's driving me crazy haha.

Here's my setup; I have a 1 TB external USB harddisk, with a Mac partition, and a (former) NTFS or MS DOS partition on it, I don't know which one of them it is, I presume the latter.

I can't do anything with it, I've tried going in the recovery mode (although it seemed useless because everything is on a external harddrive), I've tried reformatting the Bootcamp partition, making a new partition out of the space I have left on the Mac partition, but nothing worked.

My goal here is, to make the Mac partition smaller, and put a larger (than before) new NTSF/MS DOS partition next to it. The Mac partition isn't full btw.

I also don't run my Macbook from this drive, it's just a external drive I use for Time Machine, and other stuff I need to back up seperately.

I hope someone could help !

This is what I see after "diskutil cs list"

You have an internal 256Gb SSD disk, which has 75Gb Bootcamp on it.

The 1TB external disk is fully occupied with a CS volume (which encapsulates your full 1TB disk). This disk has 269Gb free space. It does not have any DOS/NTFS partitions. This 296Gb disk space can be added back to the CS volume.

Do you want to remove Bootcamp from the 256Gb disk, or add the 269Gb back to the 1TB disk. These two are independent of each other.

To add the 296G back to the Jean P DISK, select the inner Jean P Disk HDD by clicking on it. Drag the bottom right corner down to all the way to the bottom, as far as it will go and Apply. If this disk had a NTFS partition in the past, it is no longer there.

Apr 15, 2015 3:52 PM in response to Loner T

Ahh okay, I get what your saying, but everything on my Mac, the 256 gb drive is fine. I have Bootcamp on it and it runs fine.

However, I had (some sort of) Windows formatted partition on the 1TB drive, and I deleted that through Disk Utility. For some reason I was able to boot Windows from it, even though it wasn't on there (perhaps I had used it before to install Windows on my Mac).

I think thåt is the reason why I get the same error as people do when they delete Bootcamp from their Mac, using Disk Utility.

As you can see in the picture, there is no way for me to drag the inner disk, Jean P Disk HDD down, I can not make it bigger.. Or even smaller for that matter.

Also, I can not make a new partition on the free space, as soon as I make it a MS DOS or even Mac partition, it will stop doing it, or it will say that my disk is full (even though I have all that free space left on it).

I have read a little about this, as some people suggest putting Bootcamp on it (again), and thén deleting it through the Bootcamp Assistant again, but I am afraid this will also format my other partition on the external drive..

I would like to add the 269 GB back to the 1TB, so I can later make a new Windows-readable partition on it, because as of now, I can not do anything to the partitions.

I forgot to say, the other free space underneath the JEAN P DISK HDD, is about 100 GB of free space.

You can try the following command from OSX Terminal. The Yosemite DU is very buggy. The long string (UUID) is from your specific CS volume. If 893G does not work try a slightly smaller number.

diskutil cs resizeVolume 37C9F6EC-412D-4792-B05A-7216BD0F13A0 893g

This is the help for the resizeVolume verb.

diskutil cs resizeVolume

Usage: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume

lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode size

Resize a logical volume, which is one of one or more disks that consume storage

out of a logical volume group. The logical volume group will have more or less

available space after this operation, if it was a shrink or grow, respectively.

Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume

11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 10g

Apr 15, 2015 4:21 PM in response to Loner T

I think, this helped! I have a hundred Gb more now on that disk, however in the disk utility it still shows the same thing. I don't think I can change anything yet, as in make a new Windows-readable partition to go forward.

Also, when I choose "Show Info" on the disk, it shows me i have 343 GB free (alot more than before) but in the Disk Utility it shows I only have 344 MB free, very odd.

Please see the pictures, and thank you btw, for your time ! 🙂

"Beschikbaar" means available, "Gebruikt" means used, I'm Dutch haha.

You are confusing disk space in various 'containers'.

On the 1TB disk, you have the following disk space distribution.

1. 893G in a CS Volume (or Container) = GPT2 on disk1.

2. 134MB in Apple boot = GPT3 on disk1

3. 200MB in EFI = GPT1.

4. Free Space on disk is 207384663 in 512-byte sectors ~ 98G

This adds up to ~999G which is the entire physical disk.

The 893.7G disk has a CoreStorage container which has 344MB free space. Inside the 893G container, you have files which occupy 550G, leaving 342G free.

The space in the CS container has no relationship to what is outside the container, which is roughly ~98G.

Apr 15, 2015 6:44 PM in response to Loner T

I think you've lost me haha.. I sort of understand what your saying. What I actually wanted to do, was make the 893 GB partition smaller, and add the remaining free space to the other free 98 GB, that's left from the space outside of the 893 GB container.

I would like to do that, or do I not understand it correctly and can't this be done ?

Like this, but I also would like to merge the 98 GB that's left over with the new one.
