Failed to authenticate with Google...?

Since upgrading to OS X 10.10.3 I have been receiving repeated prompts that my Google password is required in Internet Accounts. On entering the password I am prompted to give OS X permission to work with my account. This is always followed by an error:

User uploaded file

Is anyone else getting this? Any suggestions? It looks like a possible Keychain issue, or is Google not allowing OS X to authenticate? I considered enabling less secure apps in Google temporarily to allow authentication, but I tried this and no joy... I'm on a 13" mid 2013 MacBook Air.

Hi there, we were having this "Failed to authenticate to Google" problem on several OSX 10.10.3 users in our Google Apps domain.

The solution for us was in the Google Apps Admin Console (so you need admin rights on your Google Apps domain) to turn on Google+ Data API access (https://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=3187191).

Specifically: Apps - Additional Google Services - Google+ - Sharing Settings - tick 'Allow apps to access Google+ APIs'.

After this the Internet Accounts in OSX were able to authenticate and add the Google account, whether with SSO or not.

If you don't have admin rights to your Google Apps domain, I guess you will need to talk to your IT department or whoever does have the admin rights for Google Apps.

I am still suffering with this authentication error in the Internet Accounts system preferences pane. I have deleted the account many times, removed my mail accounts in the Mail app and also deleted all keychain references to google.

Has anybody heard or seen any other solutions at all for this? The problem seems to be affecting dozens if not hundreds of frustrated users now :-(

Just figure out how to get it to work on my machine:

1 add new google account.

2 enter user name

3 enter password

4 sign in.

5 Accept agreement

6 Choose which apps you want to use for the account.

7 click done

8 As soon as you click done, click on your iCloud or other previously set up accounts. I had to go back to the new account I set up to add my cal and then quickly click on a past account again to get it to accept the changes.

I had the same annoying notification window asking for the Gmail password and regardless of how many times I entered it in the subsequent window pane, the problem continued to irritate me. In my case, the problem and solution described below fixed the problem.

My Gmail is setup as an IMAP account:

1. Open Mail - > Preferences - > Accounts Tab - > Account Info pane

2. In the Incoming Server settings, my password was not entered, so I entered it here *

* This fixed the problem for me.

Note, in the Advanced Tab the IMAP settings were set to Port 993, use SSL and Password for Authentication. I had not experienced this problem until a few days ago when I did a clean install of OS 10.10.3 and I suspect the problem was with the Internet Accounts setup wizard since I did enter the password initially and everything worked fine for a short while before I began seeing the annoying notifications about a need to enter a Gmail password.

Ok, I started having this issue about 6 hours ago on my Mac and iPhone and it drove me NUTS. All the solutions I found didn’t work for my Mac. This is going to be long so I can detail everything I tried, in case it may help someone.

First the fix for my iPhone was to turn off Wifi and use my data connection to update the Google pw. For my Mac, the TL;DR: I ended up having to create a hotspot on my iPhone, connected that to my Mac with the Mac’s Wifi OFF, and then re-adding the Google account to Internet Accounts in System Preferences. I’m not sure if the other steps I tried along the way helped or not. I did the following, and tried unsuccessfully to add my Google account between each of these steps:

  • System preferences > Internet Accounts – updated the password.
  • Deleted Google account from Internet Accounts, tried to re-add it.
  • Changed my Google password.
  • Tried adding the Google account with the new pw.
  • Restarted the computer.
  • Turned Mac’s Wifi off, turned it back on.
  • Connected my Mac to my modem with an Ethernet cable, disabled Wifi.
  • Opened the Mail app > Preferences > Accounts. My Google account was still there, though it was inactive. I couldn’t delete it – got a message saying to go to Internet Accounts in Sys Prefs (thanks Apple...).
  • Changed my password in the Google account Account Information section of the Mail app preferences.
  • Unchecked “use only this server” under the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
  • Clicked the drop-down next to TLS Certificate and changed it from “none” to “com.apple.idms…..”
  • In the Advanced section, changed the IMAP port to 993.
  • Lastly, checked the "Enable this account" box in the Account Information section. NOTE: Click back to the General section to be prompted to save these settings.
  • Restarted the computer again. This time mail started working, but adding Google to Internet Accounts still didn’t. I was able to turn on Contacts and Messages at this point. The contacts loaded, but I couldn’t log onto Jabber in Messages. And, of course, I was still being prompted for my Google pw.
  • Turned ON Google’s 2-step verification. Turned off “less secure apps”. Then reversed these settings. This didn’t seem to make a difference, but here’s the link for those if you’re interested: https://security.google.com/settings/security
  • Revoked access for OSX here: https://security.google.com/settings/security/permissions
  • Turned off Mac’s Wifi. Turned off iPhone’s Wifi. Created hotspot with iPhone. Paired iPhone with Mac via Bluetooth. Added Google to Internet Accounts. NO PROMPT FOR PASSWORD!!!!!!!

John - Thanks!

Had the same issue and with TW in Socal.

Tethered MB through Phone.

Removed and Re-added the Gmail accounts.

The 2 step verification process page popped up asking me to get a code and input - This page did not pop up when connected directly to WIFI through Time Warner.

Received code and entered.

Account was re-added and no longer received Failed to Authenticate message.

Connected back to WIFI and TW.

Things are working fine.

It seems like this is an issue with TWC in Southern California for sure.

Here's another fun fact: after all my troubleshooting, I noticed in Firefox that when I typed into the location bar, Time Warner had hijacked my search!!! It should be going to Google. I did nothing to change this. I found a solution, which I recommend trying. Go here http://dnssearch.rr.com/?cat=pref&con=dns, click Preferences in the upper right-hand corner, and disable the Web Address Error Redirect Service option.

Here's the link to the page where I found that solution:

http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/49301/how-to-stop-time-warner-cable-s earch-on-firefox-for-android

I also followed the steps from the second answer, which was to change my internet's DNS servers to Google's. I'm actually starting to think that doing this may solve the Google authentication issue right off the bat.
