Q: can not remove photos from iphone
Help needed
I have a lot of photos (1688) on my iPhone (4) that I can not delete.
A few weeks back, I decided to remove all my photos because I was hitting the roof of memory in the phone. I walked my way back from most recent picture, deleting one (or rather a good handfull) at the time. This was done directly on the phone (cameraroll) using the garbagecan in the lower right of the screen, when the picture(s) in question was selected.
Now, I still have more than 1600 pictures that I can not delete. When viewed and selected, there is no garbagecan in the lower right corner. I have one recent picture and that and new pictures have the garbage can.
I have tried to mount the phone via iTunes on a PC, and tried to manually find the directory, where the pictures are on the phone, but there is only the one very recent picture remaining. This and the other 1600 pictures are however still equally visible in the camera roll on the phone. I can display each picture on the phone.
I have tried iPhoto and image capture, and they nicely displays the phone but only sees the latest pictures, not the ones I need to delete. iTunes shows in the bottom bar that there are 1688 pictures using 1.59 Gb of memory...
How do I get rid of the 1600 no-longer-wanted pictures on my phone?
Thanks
iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2

Here are two possibilities.
1. If the photos were placed onto the phone by using iTunes to sync them from a computer, see the quote below from Sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support
Delete synced photos
- In iTunes, locate and click on your device.
- Click Photos.
- Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."- Click Apply.
Learn how to delete photos and video synced from iTunes when you can't access the originals.
2. Another possibility: Why does my iOS device say I have more photos than I can find?
