App Store shows 2 updates but doesn't open

Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core i 5

OS X Mavericks 10.9.5

After 4 months of non activity (I have been away) I checked for updates. The App Store shows 2 in its icon. When clicking to open it opens but nothing is there - feels like a dead-end. How to make App Store work?
