Q: how do you create events in photos version 1

I've upgraded to Photos and now find I cannot create, merge or split events.  Does anybody know how to do this?

There are no events in Photos.  The Photos.app does not support events. The library is structured automatically by Moments and Collections.

The "events" you are seeing in the migrated library are albums and not events. These albums have been created from the photos in each iPhoto event.

If you want something similar for new imports,

    • select the photos in the "Last Import" album
    • and create a new album for each new import.
    • Name this album, like you would name a new event.
    • Drag it to a folder for new events.

Moments in Photo are the new Events.  There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder. To open the sidebar if it's not open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Album/Events can only be sorted by Title.  Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

And that albums do not partition the Photos Library. With an event you could be sure, that a photo and all its version were in exactly one event. If you deleted a photo from an event, it was gone from the library. But a photo can be in many albums, and its edited versions and duplicates in different albums.

You can, however, manually drag albums in the "My Albums" section of the Albums view around to whatever order you want, & drag those albums vertically in the sidebar to show a different order there. This works only if you do not have the View Menu item "Keep sorted by Title" checked. If you check that your manual sort order will be lost (unless you immediately undo that action), so it is not a substitute for other automatic sort options (although I'm not sure what ones would make sense for albums).

Yes, but like in iPhoto if you use the Option+Command+Delete key combination that will move the photo to the Recently Deleted section where it can be finally removed from the library.

But a photo can be in many albums, and its edited versions and duplicates in different albums.

I'm unclear about that statement.  Just created 3 albums with the same photos in each.  Edited one of the photos in one album and the edit was reflected in all of the other albums and in the Moment.  When I deleted the photo with the key combination above it was removed from all albums and the Moment.   From my experience it's working just like it did in iPhoto.  What am I missing?

Like Old Toad said, at least in this respect Moments are the new Events since a photo can appear in just one Moment.

Thank you, I feared as much.  Whilst much of the new application is good I find removal of the 'event' capability irritating especially having set my library of photos up to take advantage of events.  It seems that now I have to choose between using the photos cloud capabilities and iPhotos old event capability.

We should all ask Apple via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html to add a view of the Moments as icons (like Events in iPhoto) with the sort option of by Date, ascending or descending.  That would answer one of many user's complaints.

I agree....my photos are set up by events (in iPhoto).  It was a great way to arrange them.  It seems that all the work I did in iPhoto is kinda useless now.  I feel that my pics are in separate places which I guess they are in reality!  I wish that Apple would do some type of survey of user likes and dislikes of an app before changing it.  We will no sooner get used to this and then it will change.  I am no techy and I was still learning about how iPhoto worked!

If you did not uninstall iPhoto, it will still be there in your Applications folder.  And if you had updated to the latest version iPhoto 9.6.1 before you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3,  you can simply drag iPhoto back to the Dock from your Applications folder and continue to use it. Double click iPhoto and confirm, that you want to open iPhoto and not Photos.   It is not compulsory to use Photos, while it it still the first release.
