**Computer Cleanup**

My computer is running really slow. I would like to know how to clean disk files? I have already deleted all my pictures and videos and it stilll funns slow. I know how to run the cleanup process and defrag on a Windoes but, not on a MAC. I usually do a run on windows and %temp% to delete all temp files and a defrag along with a disk C cleanup. I donot know how to do it on a MAC. Can someone please help????

You can use Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support and backup and restore your OSX Partition only (not the full system), which will defragment your OSX partition.

The EtreCheck utility (http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck) will anonymize your OSX installation, which you can post as a reply to this discussion. It should also help further analyze what may be the cause of slow downs.

You need to download EtreCheck to your Mac and run it. You can then copy it to clipboard and post as a reply. Here is an example.

EtreCheck version: 2.1.8 (121)

"Cleaning" your computer is not a solution to the problem. There are a number of programs that claim to "clean" your Mac, saying that this is necessary to improve the performance of the machine, but these are all scams. Such things may be necessary on Windows, but they are not on the Mac.

As for a solution to the problem, for a start, it sounds like you may have some kind of adware installed. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it.

If that doesn't help, I'd echo Loner T's recommendation to download and run EtreCheck and post a copy of the report that it generates here.

(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com.)

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I will try all of them as soon as I get home hopefully Everything will go back to normal. As for the RAM I wish to keep my current one and delete all unnecessary apps that I dont need in order to bring it back to normal as a new computer. Also will use an external Hard drive to store all my info so I should have a fresh computer.

Apr 22, 2015 9:31 PM in response to stevejobsfan0123

This is what it looks like after setting up TIME MACHINE/restoring, deleting adware, did not see Mackeeper so IDK if there might be traces or if adware remover took care of that.
