Good evening, my son has given me via ebay an iPhone 4s. But my joy is somewhat muted because I do not hear without I turn on the speakers. Is this a common mistake that has already had somebody and what should I do?

There are several threads on sound problems with the 4s.

Some 'solutions' seem to be mechanical, as in removing obstructions from the speaker.
