Cannot verify email address for FaceTime or iMessage on iPod 5th generation

Ii have had a new 5th generation iPod as my old 4 gave up the ghost. However I cannot verify my email address on the iPod for my FaceTime and iMessage. I have reset the iPod and the iPod settings and have had no luck. Please help this is my only contact with my dad sometime. I'm out of ideas and really need some help
