How to restore cropped photo?

Hi, I cropped photo in preview and since there is only an option to save it, not save as new, I selected from File menu "duplicate", added new name for it but both of them ended up being cropped!! My time machine was off 😟. Is there any chance I can have back the original? I am using macbook pro.

thanks!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Have you disabled local autosave?

Autosave is supposed to take care of this for you…

OS X Lion: About Auto Save and Versions - Apple Support<-- See the popup in the 'Auto Save' section it may allow you to browse the history of this file.

Time Machine also can make 'local snapshots' which means changes are saved to the internal HD until a backup disk is connected. This is designed for laptops.

Check the 'Enter Time Machine' menu item anyway - it could be in the local history (grey not pink backups).

These may not help you get the file back, but you may need to look at how the system is setup.
