Battery overheating

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro. I'm experiencing battery overheating (35 C). Isn't there a fan that should come on automatically? Is there a way to check to see if the fan is operating?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
