HELP
Trying to install the os but it tells me that it cannot be installed on the Mac HD because time machine is set up to backup there, but it gives me no other options????

Ok so i turned the time machine backup off. it still wont allow me to install?
You need to follow the article's instructions as well as turning the backup off.

What do you suggest I use for backing up all my documents, and information on my computer?
This one: OS X- Cannot install on a volume used by Time Machine for backups. Click on the blue text.
Use Time Machine to back it up onto a drive other than the one which holds the OS. When done, you can just delete the backups from the first drive.

What about a large thumb drive or should I get a removable hard drive?
Use a hard drive; it should be least twice the size of the data you'll be backing up.
