May 16, 2016 7:06 AM in response to rogerfrommooresvilleby Keith Barkley,Ain't gonna happen. The market for professional photo software is small, and Adobe has a big chunk of it. Apple no longer needs professional flagship products to show off and market computers - since they want to sell phones and iPads, not computers.

May 16, 2016 10:51 AM in response to Keith Barkleyby phosgraphis,Keith, I agree with your general premise, but if that's the case I'm curious why Apple still upgrades, supports and markets pro video apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro? Surely the market for those products isn't that much bigger (if at all) compared to the professional photographer marketplace.

May 16, 2016 11:01 AM in response to phosgraphisby léonie,That is the reason why I am not investing much effort into learning Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro. I have the advanced applications but try to get everything done in iMovie and GarageBand. It will be less work should these professional apps will be dropped as well.

May 16, 2016 11:22 AM in response to phosgraphisby Keith Barkley,I think that constantly upgrading professional RAW support is a big pain. You are never fast enough. There really is no equivalent in the video and audio worlds.

May 16, 2016 11:45 AM in response to Keith Barkleyby phosgraphis,Yes, RAW support is a pain. But Apple is still having to provide it via the OS for Photos. So that impact is really no different if Aperture were still around.
I know we are kind of "beating a dead horse" since Aperture is likely not coming back, but I'm really curious as to Apple's marketing decision regarding Aperture.

May 16, 2016 2:31 PM in response to phosgraphisby Keith Barkley,Note I said *professional* Raw support. The Apple guys can now slow down with the support. And I got the impression that there was more to Aperture support than iPhoto/Preview support. They no longer have to provide that.

I think it has something to do with Apples Proprietary issues - any other company would either spin off professional applications into a stand alone company more attuned to that particular market place - or sell outright to a company that can continue to keep them up to date. (That would be the same for aftermarket parts which in apples case is last year)

May 17, 2016 9:15 AM in response to notcloudyby Keith Barkley,I wonder if we shouldn't push to open-source Aperture.

May 17, 2016 9:52 AM in response to Keith Barkleyby léonie,An Open Source Aperture would be very helpful.

May 17, 2016 12:07 PM in response to Keith Barkleyby David Strait,I suspect this would be an uphill battle, but I would definitely support this action. I can think of several reasons why Apple wouldn’t want to support this. I also suspect Apple wouldn’t allow it to be called “Aperture” in the unlikely case that they agreed to it.
Not sure what would be the best way to communicate this to Apple. Using the “Feedback” option is probably a bit weak. If you (or another person) has an idea how to attempt this, please let others know your ideas. I give this a zero-chance of success unless there is an organized effort. Perhaps a separate tread is warranted.

May 17, 2016 2:01 PM in response to Keith Barkleyby Allan Eckert,I would say the chances of getting Aperture open sourced are right up there with snowballs in you know where.

May 17, 2016 2:28 PM in response to Allan Eckertby Keith Barkley,I think the only chance would be to get the guy who headed Aperture development that used to post on these boards way back when. If he headed the team, he might get Apple to free it. But I have no idea how to get that to happen.

May 19, 2016 1:09 AM in response to Keith Barkleyby léonie,I tried to send an email to one of the members of the Aperture developer team, but that email address is not working any longer.
