iTunes keeps dropping out

For the last 3 days iTunes has repeatedly dropped out within just a few seconds of opening. I am using the latest version 12.1.2.27 and my Mac desktop is using OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 I can't sync any device and it's basically unusable. Shutting down my Mac hasn't helped.

Does anyone have any advice that a fairly basic Mac user can understand? Is this a glitch in the latest update?

Thanks. Sarah

What exactly do you mean by "dropping out?" Does it crash?
