Font encoding problems

I get wrong characters with some fonts when selecting non-english input language (eg. Latvian). Here is an example with Ubuntu font (google.com/fonts). Other OS X applications display correct characters with the same font.

First line in the attached image is Ubuntu with wrong chars, second in Times with correct chars. I also captured TextEdit window with correct characters using Ubuntu font.

What could possibly be wrong and how to fix this?

I switched to the Latvian keyboard and get both š and Š with your keyboard procedure, in Pages '09, Pages 5.5.2 and here in Safari.

But as I mentioned I have Ubuntu [by Daltan Maag]*, you said you have the Google Ubuntu.

Thank you Peter for you help!

I reinstalled Ubuntu from the sources you provided but it didn't help. I'm getting the same problem.

It still works in TextEdit, but doesn't work in Pages and Numbers...

Anyway, the fact that it works for you, I guess, means that there is something wrong with my OS X or iWork. I will try to empty application cache, reboot, reset settings, etc...
