I'm going to the States for summer school this summer and I know that my MacBook Pro (spring 2011 model with the old L-shaped charger) is dual voltage because I asked when I bought it, but can I really just put an adapter on my UK charger or do I need to get an actual US charger?

What you will need is a compatible wall AC plug for the USA. The charger and the connection to the MBP are totally compatible.
