Is there a workaround to adopt an existing iCloud address to work with my AppleID?

I have an old iCloud / @me.com email address I would like to use with my Apple ID. Apple won't let me register this email because it says it is already its own AppleID. Is there a workaround for this?

I'm afraid there is no workaround. Once an address has been associated with an Apple ID, either as the primary address or an alias, it cannot be moved away from that account. Don't waste your energy trying to chase this one: it can't be done.
